1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
Hey guys, im new to the honda performance side of life and recently bought a 1991 honda civic 4wd wagon with the 6speed manual trans (has a grany gear) Im tryin to find performance mods to do but im not sure what will or will not work. I believe it has a D16a6. Well it runs good and rides good but i need the power.... Thanks for any help
Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
im not even talking about racing. having even 150hp on a drivetrain that is designed for maybe 100 (on the coldest day of the year) is going to turn into a nightmare. id say anything more than an intake and exhaust is gonna be pushing it. you gata realize that the parts already have 17 years of use on them. ive seen people do exactly what you are thinking of doing and i have also seen the problems they have run into. im not trying to bash your ideas or anything, im just trying to save you some money before you break a lot of stuff.
if you go through with it, id love to see the buildup and outcome. good luck

Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
couldnt he beef up the diff and what not by just buying new parts from honda tho? or maybe finding aftermarket stuff cause the car is so old honda probably doesnt make parts for it anymore.
Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
Thanks for your input chawski, I bought the car for $375 from a friend (we're both mechanic's) he put a new timing belt and water pump on it so i just paid for the parts. hehe made out good on this little bugger. Im just not used the the ricer side of life. I own a 1979 F-150, 35inch goodyear mtr's, 351 with modified bigblock 400heads bored .030 over and other little dudad's and i've twisted off the rear pinion gear twice, numerous universal joints, and other drive line parts. It's pushing over 300hp at the rear wheels and I know the trucks limits yet i still push it beyond them
. replacing parts because of ""weak links"" is nothing new to me and I usually replace them with custom or extreme duty "unless i leave a weak part inline so I know what will blow apart instead of the transaxle." I was thinking of intake and slight exhaust, but also wanted opinion of which brand, perhaps new injectors, i doubt this thing has vtec, I dont know if there are computers or chips that can allow me more um possibilities of um destruction. I have a spare engine with only 26k on it so if i blow this one im at no loss except my time.
If i dont have it, I can get it, If i cant get it, I can get on made for it, I just need to know what ""should"" i stay away and what i should look for, Thanks for ya'lls help

Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
I remember seeing a video of one of these with a turbo on it and it was a rocket. May want to look for that video think it had his setup on it.
Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
Thanks, and yeah its all mechanical and wont hurt anybody so if it breaks i'll fix it. Are there any brands I should stay away from or chose over another. Im used to the V-8 brands not the 4 bangers. any info you guys might have on what ""normally"" breaks on the 4wd's so i can plan on having spares would be great. Thanks
Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
maybe it is possible to beef it up a bit with a crv drivetrain, since its the only other honda with 4wd that has a chance of fitting with some modification? i can tell you your clutch will be one of the biggest weak points in the drivetrain.
for $375 you definately didnt go wrong....hell if you kill it, you didnt really lose much. personally, id just beat the hell out if it stock, but it would def make one hell of a sleeper if you somehow could get some power out of it.

Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
i don't think he meant "ricer" in the context we use it in. at least i hope not. i think for him, anything that isn't "trail rated" is probably "rice".
this thread certainly is interesting.

yeah, I was just giving him a hard time really. haha. I get all kinds of ricer jokes from all of my dad's friends nonstop. I was pulling into the driveway a few weeks ago and my exhaust scraped kinda hard, so I got out to look at it and without missing a beat a dude said, "what's wrong? rice fallin out of it?"

Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
I would put in a b16. The b16 or b18 are like the small block chevy's for the 4 banger hondas. They'll fit into most pre 2000 hondas with little to no modification. This is the wrong site to ask your questions about old gen hodnas. Most of the people on this site know about 7th gen 2001-2005 civics.
I would suggest going to www.honda-tech.com. There is going to be more knowledge about the old hondas on there.

Re: 1991 civic 4wd performance upgrades?
Yah i didnt mean ricer in the disrespectful way
considering i'm used to bigblock 4x4 trucks. the smallest engine i've owned in anything has been a semi-built 302 v-8. so anything with a 4banger even a buick... eh ricer. now if you want the **** talkin.. then yah i bought a rice patty and need to get a match and fire it up some. Thanks for the tip about the clutch. So i guess i'll have to look for another forum site for these old honda's ..... thanks though. About the thought of using cr-v parts .... is there after-market upgrades for those or are the parts just .. better..?

go all the way and pioneer a B18C swap, and retain the all wheel drive. Using a Honda CR-V AWD tranny and rear diff, and making a custom driveshaft, as well as mounts, shift linkage, and many other aftermarket and fabbed parts, we were able to get this little beast running. Here is a list of the mods -
B18C1 Motor
98 CRV AWD Transmission
98 CRV rear Differential
Custom ISC Drive shaft
Fidanza Flywheel
ACT Street/Strip Clutch
Skunk 2 Intake Manifold
Skunk 2 Stage 2 Cams
Crower Valve Springs and retainers
Apexi NEO A/F controller
Custom Reflashed ECU converted to OBD1
Tenzo Intake
Custom DC Sports Header with 2.5" outlet
Custon Mandrel 2.5 Exhaust
Tenzo Front and Rear Strut Bars
Unknown Front 22mm Sway Bar
Unknown Rear Adjustable 22mm Sway Bar
Kosei K1 16x7.5 Wheels
Toyo T1s 225/40/16 Tires
