What psi???

Hey I know this is problably a stupid question! but what psi do you guys put in your tires? or does it change with the size of the tires? I just got my rims(enkei cdr9) and tires(kumho712 in 205/45/17) today and on the tire itself it says 44psi max so does that mean i should keep it at 44? that seems kinda high to me. what do you guys keep yours at especailly thos of you who have the same kumho712 in 205/45/17??? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

run about 32-34 psi in the front, and 31-32 rear.
just make shure you adjust the pressure when the tires are cold. and that the front tires match as well as the rear. You dont want a different psi on each tire, its Bad for handling balance.

I run my falken 512's at 32 on the front and 30 on the rear. (205/40ZR17)

Mine are running 37 on the fronts, 36 on the back 215/45/17... max is 51. It depends on the tire... fill them up and drive through gravel, see how much of the tread is covered. You should cover all except the very outer edge.
General rule is 2 PSI per inch larger over what the number in the door says.

Hey Zzyzx,

Just wondering, how are the falken ze512 you are using?? Is the dry and wet traction gd?? Im planning to get those for my car, either same as you (205/40 R17) or 215/40 R17. But the thing is that im afraid the load index for the 205s are not sufficient for my sedan. Thx..

It says 44 or the tire because that is the maximum pressure you can put in the tire before you run the risk of it blowing out. When you drive, the tire heats up as it does the pressure goes up. The tire can only take so much before it blows or the seal bead lets go. Its there because there are some idiots who would probably just fill the tire up until it feels hard if there wasn't a number on there.... its just idiot proofing to keep people from overdoing it too much. You shouldn't be running pressures in the 40s on the street.

you're gonna have to play with it... every tire is different. Set it at 32 see how if feels. If its sluggish, pump them up to 34... if you feel confident with the handling then thats good, if it still feels like the tires follow the road too much, then go more... no one is going to be able to tell you exactly what to put it at. Theres no etched in stone rule about pressure. If you just don't care then put them at 35 and be done, but if you want to use them well, then you'll have to spend the time tinkering. when all but the outer edge of the tread is contacting the road, you've got the pressure pretty good... it should be somewhere in the range of 32-38 PSI.

most cars are set at 35 psi at the factory or supposed to be set to that number. Right now my car is 33 psi all the way around cause i havent got much done to my car for one reason (but it might be low since i havnet checked it in a while). Plus more weight is in the front and more of the feel of what you prefer. if you are autoxing then its gonna be more but if your drag racing then its gonna be less.

They are my street tires, though I did autocross on them a few times. I can say that as an autocross tire, they are so-so (good to learn on, not good to win with) onece they warm up they stick a little better. they have good brake-away qualities, and are predictable in the corners(they squeal at you a litte bit just before they let go. And when they do let go its a smooth transition, not that having them let go is a good thing) also I couldnt seem to get the things to launch at any more then about 3200RPM's with out them spinning.

As street tires, they are pretty good. I have no complaints. We dont get much rain here in Las vegas but when it does it pours, so for wet traction, they are pretty good (not the best but decent). I had a set of 502's when I first got the car and I can say that the 512's are MUCH MUCH better in both wet and dry traction. They dont compair to my set of Azenis though. (Azenis sports are amazing) I would go with the 215/40ZR17's though, the 205's are a little narrow on a 7" wheel.

Falken makes a good tire, but avoid the 502's they are rocks!!!

Ic...i do intend to run the falken as normal street tires. I do know the Azenis are better, but then...it cost more & i doubt i will use them to their full potential. Just need a set of tires with gd traction when i do speed . So im most likely goin to go with the ze512s. As for using 215 size tires, any idea if it will rub?? My car is lowered with eibach pro-kit, kind off worried that if i opt for 215s...it will cost some rubbing. And ive yet to decide whether i will stick wif /40 or go with /45s, as the road condition at my place is bad.

Suprisingly, My set of 205/50R15 Azenis were only 65$ each, where My 512's 205/40ZR17 were around $120 each. But then you have to factor in Cost per mile. 512' I think should last something like35-40000 miles. where the Azenis, for me, will probably last under 600 miles (Autocross eats tires). for others they should last about 10000 miles.

512'S @ $120/35000 miles = $.003 per mile.
Azenis @ $65/10000 miles = $.0065 per mile
Azenis @ $65/600 miles = $.1083per mile (Autocross)

215's will not rub, I'm not sure about 225's though. I plan on going with 215's the next time I need tires.

had to fix my math.

Nvr knew the azenis were cheaper then the ziex. But then, like you said..it wears off faster, in the long run..it will be more feasible for me to go with the ziex. I doubt i will use the azenis to their full potential. Thx for your help, i`ll be fitting in 215s when i change the tires. I doubt i could go with 225s as my rims are 17X7.5, and they are quite thick already.
