Backfiring?

When i am in 3rd or 4th gear at like 2,000 rpms, and i quickly floor it, i have noticed that my exhaust pops like a backfire. I have 2.25 inch custom exhaust with a universal muffler, would that cause it to backfire because of loss of back pressure or is something else wrong? PLEASE HELP!

My fiancee's car backfires, too. He's got an exhaust, but even before he had that it would still backfire. I always laugh when it happens. It's pretty funny.

The ecu is probably still adjusting to the new exhaust. I think it is dumping too much fuel. It happened to my accord several years ago. It went away after a few weeks.

I love the backfire because it's just so random. You never know when to expect it and since it catches us off guard, it makes it even more funny.

No way, the backfiring on my car sounds pretty cool, it's not too loud at all and it only does it when i'm going slow. It does it pretty randomly too...

oh my god not to restart old threads but...

backfiring isn't good for the engine, and it shouldn't be like that.

you lose horsepower due to unspent gas going back into the exhaust manifold,

or at least, thats what it seems like in this scenario, since the problem occured when you swap your exhaust system...

there's a leak somewhere... or the system wasn't put together correctly, *shrug*

but if its a problem such as gasket leak, or burnt gasket... it will eventually do some harm in some area... (ie: burn away the manifold block if its the gasket between the header and the manifold, and eventually damaging the aluminum block...)

Like I said, it is usually the ecu adjusting and simply dumping too much fuel due to the increase airflow. It should go away on it's own. If not, you need to do further investigation if it continues longer than a month or two.
