Aluminum Spoiler Haters

ok i am so sick of people hating on them, and saying that they themselves are all go and no show. this just has to be clearded up on here.

YES they are not pretty on 90% of cars, and by no means are they the best looking civic spoiler, that is if you want show.

so now that thats out of the way lets get into the physics of it. i was going to work all this crap out but its too late and i want to go to bed, feel free to work it out and post in replys.

the area of my hand is around 28 sq" if i hold my hand on a downwards 45 degree angle at >>>60 mph<<<(not 150) theres about 10 pounds of downforce on it(im at the gym 4 times a week i know 10 pounds)

so at 60, or 80 or 100, with a 45 degree angle, the average adjustable wing is approx 3600 sq" you do the math on the downforce

i lived in north central fl(ocala FL) (now in O town) since i was 6 and the roads are EXQUISITE there is nothing i like more than hitting the amazing banked sweeping corners around this area and slamming on the brakes to hit 90s and damn near hairpin 180s somtimes, the roads again are just sooo fun to drive. ive seen few tracks i would like to drive more than around here. and i will tell you, after everything ive done to my car the biggest change came from the spoiler, it doesnt look all that pretty, neither do my rediculous 235/45zr17 tires but between the 2 i dont see how you could pull any more lateral Gs in a civic without major suspension changes, and i challenge any of you to hit this corner i hit everyday at about 90-93 mph and hold the road(theres accualy holes in the treeline where people ran off the road and wraped there cars around about 4 trees :frown, next time you drive through fl post somwhere here ill show you

just so you know, yea i lost about 7 mph off top speed but id trade that for the stick on the corners forever

in the end I dont want to be an *** but if your all drag and have never realy burned through a hilly mountan road, or curvy banked corners of some rural area with a car with great suspension and downforce dont talk sh*t. out of every mod on my car its the only thing i would never pass up, unless i quit racing...

when i get around to it ill post pics of me at 80 on highway, taken from other car, the fender gap is non existant, and if you want pics of that corner ill get those too = )

sorry but it needed to be said

now im gona have a beer and go back to my normal quiet self

edit: typos

also: just wanted to prove worth, not looks, mine puts dents in my trunk, and its got a bit of rust on inside trunk cause i havent changed rubber feet heh baisicaly the whole point of this was to keep people from saying "why on fwd car" like it has to do with acceleration traction heh

After re-reading my post I now realize I may have come off as an a*****e which I am, but was not trying to prove in my post. What you say has some sensibility to it and yes, aluminum spoilers are often helpful .. I think people's biggest complaints about them is the style on the car. I personally do not like the looks of them on most cars. I can see your points though and they are somewhat valid.

My question is why you need so much downforce on a FWD 127hp car?

Never have liked them and they never looked good in FnF so just leave them at the shop or in the garbage. I hate the sight of them they make me even if they are somewhat usefull I still think they are super FUGLY

Two points:
1. My car drives great on "curvy banked corners", and I don't have a huge aluminum rear spoiler.
B. The problem most FWD cars have is understeer, and adding more downforce to the rear of a FWD car doesn't help that.

why? can it not go 60 mph or so? wings give downforce with give better cornering because you can pull more lateral Gs, in fact the only cars on earth that need downforce for traction with acceleration are prostock and topfuel drag cars, which btw can spinn the tires at 250 mph = P

I'd also like to proclaim myself an anti-aluminum wing on civic's guy. Why the hell are you driving a civic 90 + mph around a sharp corner, are you trying to commit suicide? I wouldn't be suprised if that wing actually made the car take off for flight, sure looks like it would.
But on the real, they look nasty & I know it's not all about show, it's about go. But most of the people putting those wings on have no idea what they are for & just put them on because they saw a Toyota Supra from "The Fast & The Furious" with one. Heh, wasn't that Supra like 700 + horsepower? Some where around that I think. Go figure 127-145 with all the bolt ons/engine work, maybe 200 + with turbo or swap Civic vs. that Supra. Even with 200 + that wing is pointless. Front Wheel Drive Vs. Rear Wheel Drive. It's all right there.

I like alluminum wings as long as they aren't too tall and skinny.
Im planing to get a alumium cf wing on my sedan but its hard to look for a decent one that looks nice.

i know my limits... also i would never ***never*** do this on a road with traffic on it, these roads might have 5 cars an hour and i ALWAYS have at least 1 or 2 friends spotting with 2 way radios

keep it safe = )

k, & sorry if my post was too harsh. I just have a thing about wings that aren't the same color as the car, it's as if they don't belong.

IMO aluminum wings are very fugly on most cars, especially civics. I understand what you're saying about downforce but a regular, non aluminum spoiler will provide enought for a 127 hp civic.

What a preposterous post. First off, I don't hate aluminum spoilers. I hate aluminum spoilers on civics. I have no qualms with a spoiler on an RX-7

That 10 minute interjection on your hand is not physics. You are not applying downforce to the whole car, you are applying it the rear.

I want you to go to the back of your civic, and push down on it. You notice how the front reacts to your pushing down on it? Because of the downforce, the weight has been shifted to the rear of the car. Now, imagine your spoiler to be pushing down the rear of the car at high speeds. What happens?

You're making the front end lighter, which is bad for FWD cars, and especially for our cars. Why? Because the power is transferred through the front. If the wheels that have the power have less weight distributed on them, your car is not going to efficiently transfer power onto the road. Also, the wheels that do the turning are at the front, and the wheels toward the rear have more weight on them, which are facing straight forward; hence you will understeer even more than stock. Also, stock cars especially in US in general have a tendency to understeer to prevent people losing control of the car. Our civic is no different. It has a tendency to understeer. Hence, increasing downforce toward the rear while keeping the same downforce toward the front (you never mentioned any front lip/spoiler) makes understeer worse.

And I'm not thrilled how people who try to defend their spoiler have this urge to talk trash. Everytime I explain it, people just ignore it, and a new thread pops up with somebody who thinks they'll be the next WRC champ talkin about how great the spoiler improved their car.

-Aki

well look at his calculations and theres your answer if u road course or autocross it a lil more downfore on the rear end hence the rear tires have a lil more traction this is good for tight cornering but whatever if u wanna put a wing on your car its your thing i like them sometimes depending on the wing and the car ita all a mater of what u like

Well hey do u ever think that ppl go road coursing and auto crossing i personally don;t see the point of going really fast in a straight line theres always gonna b someone who is faster than u and yeah its cool to see a 10 second car but its loses its flare after seeing it time after time, as for the wing comment thats your thing like i said b4^

in any case im chopping that thing off when i finish my crx, this car cant keep up with anything, and i realy wanted to get into autox
so i stripped a 91 crx to nothing, had chassies reinforced with about 3 hours a welding and am in the process of a b18c5 swap so once im done with that the civic is more or less going to be just show, gona get the kami wing probly.

well if u are gonna autocross a crx u might wanna think about dropping a b16 casue the b18 throws off the balence in the front of the car at higher speeds but if ya want more info on crx's an autocrossing check out Crx Resource

If you created downforce on the rear of a FWD car you would lift the front tires off the ground which defeats the purpose

Aluminum spoilers are ugly, ricey, and pointless on street driven, FWD, compact cars. People will continue to gawk and laugh at your car if you have one. These people are not admiring your ride. Do whatever you need to in order to justify it. Get used to it.
