S.J. man dies in apparent street race

S.J. Mercury News

An 18-year-old San Jose man was killed late Friday night and four other people were injured in an apparent street racing accident in San Jose's Evergreen neighborhood, police said.

The victim's identity was unknown Friday night, but police said he was seen driving a newer-model, green Honda Civic northbound on Nieman Boulevard alongside a silver Mercury. Both cars appeared to be racing from a hilltop near Yerba Buena Road along Nieman Boulevard. They lost control north of Terrena Valley Drive, flipping over once, said San Jose police spokesman Steve Dixon.

The cars were traveling in excess of 70 mph on a 40 mph road, according to early police reports.

Police were called to the scene at 8:45 p.m. where they found both wrecked vehicles along an embankment on Nieman Boulevard. In the victim's Honda, police found two other teenage passengers alert and conscious. A teenage driver and passenger were found in the Mercury. All four were taken to area hospitals, but the nature of their injuries was not known.

Residents Marla Najam and Mita Dey shook their heads as they looked toward the accident scene. Nearly every weekend, they say, they can hear revved-up engines and screeching tires along Neiman Boulevard. Friday night, the friends were getting ready to watch a movie when they heard the familiar commotion outside their window.

``We heard the brakes slamming really hard, and I said, `Oh my gosh, they're doing the doughnuts again,' '' said Dey. ``Then we heard the police sirens and knew it was serious this time.''

Dey said last weekend the apparent racing awoke her and her husband at 2 a.m.

``It's almost every weekend,'' she said.

Najam said she has continually called police to alert them to the racing problem and said she discussed the issue among parents two weeks ago at a Parent Teacher Association meeting. The accident occurred near J.F. Smith Elementary School.

``This is a disaster waiting to happen,'' she said. ``And finally, on this Friday night, a life was lost.''

Dixon said officers who patrol the Evergreen neighborhood in East San Jose will ``pay more attention'' to street races along its wide residential streets. Most of the street racing activity, he said, occurs in Central and South San Jose.
