ATTN all locals, Autocrossing...
Hey guys. I was speaking to Mike (Grey). How many would be down for a serious auto-x outing? I really want to improve my driving skills. I would love for it to be legal somehow even though I doubt it. Either way post ideas on locations or events and if you'd be down or not.

SCCA membership costs $65 a year and that gets you $5 off each SOLO II entry fee. Plus you get subscriptions to National SCCA magazine "SportsCar" and some regional magazine called "Pit Talk". To be in a SOLO II event you'll pay either $25, or $20 (if you're an SCCA member). There are 12 events for this 2003 season. The first one is April 13. There are a lot of rules to this and they're outlined here: Introduction to Solo II (autocross)
We could try something locally, but we need a good location. I assume we're thinking of a huge parking lot with little cones to mark off turns? We'de have to buy some cones. Then we'de need to set up the course. That's going to be a lot of cones though. If everybody bought a set of 20 cones then it might work. Say 5 of us bought 20 cones. That would make a hundred cones; that might work. Setting up the course ain't that hard. Maybe some chalk too to draw the boundaries? We need chich chalk though; or maybe some kind of stuff that you can spray?
A real track would be ideal, but where the hell do you find a deserted track? Haha, no way...
The other option is to find a place that has no curbs and has grass or gravel on the side of the road and is very windy. I guess we just need to look sor a place like this. Some parks may have roads like this. Not sure if they loop though. That would be the best. How the hell are we going to invade a park though? Not possible I think. What we need is private property. Preferably ours. Anyone got an old airport they don't use? LOL That would be ideal. Maybe we can rent one out for a day?
If there are anough of us it might work. Instead of paying $25 to drive a couple of times with people we don't know we could each pay $25 and maybe come up with enough to rent out some space like that for a day? We'de need to look around and find that kind of a spot. It could happen. Anyone have any other ideas?

I think signing up might be our best bet. In the Spring we'll have more luck finding spots, right now a lot is covered and snow and has a ton of holes and bumps that won't be there in the spring.
Hey noname, where are ya man?

this is a great idea. there are many abanodoned small craft airports in NE. when i was working for the hartford police dept, we had driver training courses in groton CT at an old airport. im sure if a waiver for was well writen, and we contacted a place like this it would work.

sounds good, what I like about the airport field is that you can make your own course. We could do quite a few things there

Yep. We could set something up for braking. Kinda a test your brakes type run. We could set up am autocross course. We could set up a drifting course. We could set up a 180 turn-around course. We could do basically anything we wanted. Burn-outs galore if people wanted... Whatever...

there are mad potholes right now like you said
we might have to wait till the spring
I'm in too. I'm Springfield, MA. Keep us posted. When I was on he SCCA site, the closest events were Ayer, MA and some place in New Hampshire. Nice to have all 7thgens though.

Sounds like a great idea. I know in the summer, Limerock has special events like this. We might be able to get a group rate or something. Plus they provide driving instructors.

around here they do it at the giants stadium parking lot. you might want to look into that. i mean the gilette stadium in walpole (or whatever the town is). i mean if you cant find an airport that is.
airports are a little tricky tho. if its abandoned its probably gonna be a little rund down...with grass growing on the pavement and stuff. not the best traction. but i guess its better than nothing.
good luck...take pictures/videos.

Lime Rock is in CT. It's a road race course though. I guess they have another area or a big parking lot for auto-x/ I plan road racing there more than anything though.

im thinking of joining NASA for auto-x...they also do performance driving series at lime rock and other venues...the driving sessions are like 150-200...but it might be worth it. seems like something fun to do on a saturday. lol
anyone ever join NASA? is it worth joining right away or is it better to go to an auto-x first, pay the unregistered fee and see what its like?

I met one of the instructors (from Limerock) while at work. He said that for around $300, you can drive your car on the track with and instructor, giving a private lesson. I guess first he drives your car, then you drive with him. Sounds pretty cool to me, but a bit costly. Just thought I would throw that out for all.
yah im from the waterbury area.....limerock raceway is in the high class portion of CT....anything you buy up there including gas is gonna run ur wallet.....i would def be down for something like autocross tho.....if anything pans out keep posting...ull see me there
Thats what I wanna know, whats the longest straight on a AUTO-X coarse and what kinda speeds do they hit. I had a 56k so I don't download vids much. From some of the pictures it looks like they don't get out of second gear much even? Whats the deal?
