Rep Power: 341 The Mazda 6 was rated better than the Altima and Jetta GLI in some recent auto mag. The Altima has the most room, but the fit and finish isn't as nice as the other two cars.
Tell her to look at the Jetta (1.8T,) Mazda 6, & the new Accord. I drove my sister in law's 2003 EX Accord (4banger) and though the pick-up was terrible, it was finished very nicely.

Second, the SRT-4 isn't out yet, and I also thought it was going to be a 2-door.
He said "new" car... not a used audi.
Settle down there cheif.

Rep Power: 0 Accord, Camry, and altima are probably the top 3 in that category w/concern to reliability, quality, durability, and resale value. They are all nice cars but I can't stand the interior in the nissan or the toyota. Anyhow, the best of the 3 is for your mom to determine.

Rep Power: 0 I think the new Mazda 6 would be a good choice. The price is respectable and it has all the features and amenities that one would need. Also, you will probably be the first on the block with it, so the show-off meter might be higher.
Good Luck on your choice

The 4 cylinder model should more than suffice for the average 'mom.'
Should be able to find one for $20k or less if judicious with options.
There are always the Accord, Altima, 6, Taurus, and Gran Prix.....

Rep Power: 0 if your mom's plans are to buy a car and move on with her life, accord and camry are the safest choices. they're basically the cars that you "can't go wrong" with. the WRX is too small to be considered a family sedan, it's classified as a compact. just sit inside one and you'll know.
... though chaining 3 echos together would probably work quite well if you could synchronize their movement

Rep Power: 294 you can get a base model LX-V6 2k3 accord for under $25k, no alloys, no leather, no sunroof, but it still has good features. i like the V6 accord more than the 4 cyl because the engine is smoother, the 4 cyl is a little rough, and can be felt while driving ( vibrations from engine bay ). the camry is the same way, V6 is smoother than the 4 cyl, although the camry V6 is a little soft, only 192HP.
the mazda6 is a sweet car, but its smaller than the camry, accord and altima, it may not be an ideal car for you mom, but its CHEAP IN PRICE. the 160HP 4 cyl is $19k base with a manual, and still under $20k if you get the auto with manual shift mode. the 220HP V6 ( which sounds really nice, like a racing engine ) is $22k with a 5 speed auto with manual shift mode, this is the one with cloth seats and 16" alloys, but for the price, there isn't much out there that beats it.
the altima in my opinion looks sweet, both, the 175HP 4 cyl and the 245HP V6 are smooth engines, but the car is a little pricey, i went to 3 nissan dealers, and it seems that the typically equipped 4 cyl 2.5 S model alty comes with cloth, alloys, auto, and is a bit over $22k. the 2.5 SL model with leather and bose is between $25k - $26k. the V6 starts at around $24k, but its not as smooth in the ride department as the camry and accord.
you can probably talk the dealer down to $23-$24k on a new maxima, those are really nice cars, and would be my first choice ( its my first love, i have to admit it )
