Automatic into Manual *not n00b*

Like many people here I got my civic from my Momma and she was scared her son would stall and die.
After enrolling in college and having a job and now owning my civic I want a 5spd.
A few 7thgen members and I go curising a lot and yes they all have 5spds, Excluding InamineCarbonRod so I really like to have one.

Anyone go to Honda and ask them how much a manual trans costs, installation and all? I have a buddie of mine that can install it no problem. But I wanna kno if anyone else did a research on this. There has been a lot of topics about it and it WENT NOWHERE. So I will get to the bottom of this by asking Honda tomorrow.

I kno ppl said it's like 2 grand and no one's done it yet, (to my knowledge) so hopefully if someone out there that has or has some information about this can tell me, otherwise you can tell me "good luck" cuz Im about to.
Thanks.

EDIT: You think Honda will buy my auto trans, do they do that? Does it differ from each dealer?

im sure it is entirely feasible ... however the cost to benefit ratio is too high. Much like an engine swap, anything can be done, but the price is either prohibitive or not worth it. That's why nobody has done it.

- Everybody says "it's too expensive, the cost is prohibitive" blah blah blah. What exactly does this mean? How much are we talking about here for parts/labor? Ballpark figure? Everybody's idea of expensive is subjective

PRP - Foss Auto Greenville in NC has a used 5-speed on their sight for $365. Not everything you'll need...but that's a start. I've seen prices for the transaxle alone anywhere from $350 to $900.

It's not hard to do. If I had the parts I could do it for you. I don't know what the parts cost and I don't care since I have a manual transmition. I will tell you this though, the only way to sell your automatic transmition is to just sell the whole car. Think about it. Just take off all of your modifications. Put the car back to stock. Trade it in for a new 2003 manual model and you're all set. Just put back all of your modifications and enjoy your manual transmition and a new car with some new features. You'll probably spend less than you would on a swap!

If you really want to do it then just think of all the crap you're going to have to replace. Get rid of the brake pedal. Put in a clutch and brake pedal from a manual. Put in the springs for those. Support the engine. Take out the automatic tranny. Take out the center console. Take out the automatic shifter thingie. Replace it with a manual shifter thingie. Replace the console with a manul shifter console. Get a manual tranny. Get the proper gaskets for hooking it up to the engine. Put that sucker on and bolt everything down. Attach the cable linkage. Attach the clutch thingie. Done. You just spent 50+ man hours and $3,000 in parts.

with that money you might as well get a nice custom turbo done. itll cost about the same and a 5 speed will give u about 5 more hp and a turbo will double your hp. your car will be much quicker than just putting a 5 speed on. yeah yeah i know, shifting is fun, but boostings even more fun. people used to give me crap when i first got my car for having an automatic, but it gets to a certain poaint where people dont even realise what tranmission you have anymore. just keep modding and youll forget about a 5 speed when you hear that turbo spool up andyou spank the other 7th gen 5 speeds that have a few bolt on goodies.

i just talked to a friend at school today. he also has a 2k1 civic. and i found out his tranny went out for the 2nd time today. he has and auto tranny with extended warrenty. his first tranny went at around 19k and his 2nd one just went out at 50k. and i know for a fact he doesnt drive his car very hard at all.
i was just thinking if my tranny does fall apart (*which i think it will) would it be possible for honda to just give me a new manual tranny? and i buy the rest of the parts (pedals, shifter assemby, ecu, gauges). my uncle is a mechanic and i can probably talk him into swapping it for me for free as long as i pay for all the parts. and as i understand the auto tranny cost more then a manual tranny? so honda would save money and i would get my manual. win win

Your input does nearly nothing for me but thanks anyways.
I mite jus trade it in for a 2003 but then again at that rate I'd rather not get a 7thgen, sorry to say.
AzNmiKex215, they will not do that for you. My tranny went around 20k also. They put a new one in and I am scared it'll go again. I do ride my civic hard at times but not all the time and I only have 4.5k miles left and Im afraid for the worst.
I'll post tomorrow and see how it goes!

Im in the process of doing so. Your best bet would be to do what i did and go to a locol junkyard and find a messed up civic and just start ganking all the parts off.

i would say just trade in. our cars are to new and no one has done it yet so its hard to say the costs. but you would have to fabricate new parts since the auto tranny have a mount the the manual doesn't and its much smaller, i talked to the guy at the racing store we deal with and said prolly with labor anywhere from 3-5 k so in other words its not worth it. plus in our year like most new cars the auto tranny is faster than the manual since shifts are nearly instant rather than pushing the cluth in and the gear ratios on the car are atcutally good now. i beat my both my friends cars when they were both stock one was a 98 ex and the other was a 2k1 lx both coupes and i have a lx sedan auto they were both manuals. just use the money you were going to use to change your tranny and get a custom turbo with racing header. you will beat all of you friends hahaha.

Yeah that's me too!
But I figure I'll save some money now, and trade my car in later with manual tranny. When considering sensitive subjects such as auto to manual swap, where a lot of things come into consideration. One money, and two, reliability is concerned, it's better to have things stock IMO. Spending $3500 on a swap is as close as trading in your car and tacking on $3500 for a new car, depending how much resale you get.

I know our comments probably mean nothing to you if you are very determined. So I wish you best of luck and be the first to have a swap done successfully, then maybe others can follow if it's feasible.

Well that was your own fault. That's why when you buy a brand new car, you dont do permanent things until you know its the car you want to keep. But oh well, we all make mistakes. I would do what you can, replace what you can. Order stock new parts from Ebay. And then take it to Honda all shiny, and see what kind of offer you get. Then report back to us. It wont hurt you to do that.

Yea man...i know how you feel. I have a 2001 honda civic auto, it sux cause everyone has manual. But yea, i already went to the dealers and they said thats not possible, which is of course bs. So i went to one of the performance shops and they said they could do it if i just had the parts: such as pedal system, tranny, and a new computer for the car. I heard it could cost from 1k-3k. So now i don't know, most of my friends say stick isn't that great. And i can't really swap cause i have all these warranties that mess me up. If the engine fails or whatever then im screwed cause the dealers are gonna blam it on my new transmission....so for now im going fo sho.

If you have any luck, or want to discuss more e-mail me ninebreaker31@hotmail.com

Ok 1st off a Custom turbo is running about 5G! and second off i don't think i could trade my car in because my parents are still paying monthly payments to a Credit Union is this true? i talked to a buddy of mine who put in his B16A in his CRX and his friends B18C5 in a 93' HB and he said that he could do it for around $1500 or also gave me the option on the K20A and help me install it for $500 and converting it to 6 speed.

yea, anything can be done pal. It is very possible to swap that with a manual tranny and all that stuff. What are you gonna do about the gauges thou? Those are gonna be different, and also the dealership will not buy your auto tranny. Best luck is sellin on ebay or to a junkyard for some money. in the long run, it would be cheaper gettin a 5spd car from the start. But if you have the money and want to do it, then by all means go ahead.

I got an auto because i thought it would be good for me when I'm in traffic. I'm in traffic for an hour going to work and and hour going home from work. So I figure auto would be easier on me... NOT!!! It gives me even more of a headache. ESPECIALLY when people in front of me don't know how to drive and keep on braking every second. I should've got the manual. a much smoother ride in a stop-go stop-go kinda traffic.

You see, the thing about auto is that, once you let go of the brakes, the car starts moving; hence the constant braking. With a manual, you don't have to press the brakes as much as in an auto.

I'm really thinking about trading in my auto Civic for a manual. But if i'm going to do that, I figure I might as well trade it in for a different car. Or should I stick with a manual 7th gen Civic?

Just get a torque converter if your going to spend that much money. But if all you want is a manual trans, just buy a older car and build it up to be a monster. IE 93 civic hatch

Thats what im planing to do =D

this is a complete waste of both time and money. 7th gen civic standard transmissions are pure garbage. if you really want to switch from an auto, just do the k20 swap with the 6spd gearbox.'

edit: OT...i really gotta figure out how these points are being accumulated
