You can smell that ish... or at least i could in my old car... ended up driving 20 mph home in a 45 mph speed zone... People didn't like me but there is no way in hell I was paying for a tow truck
when i had my 91 accord my clutch went out on me like 60 miles away from home, it was all freeway so if i made a stop at all i had to turn it on in 1st gear and put it in gear w/out clutch...if you have the right timing on the speed the shifting is not as bad as you think..hehe..but anyways...it really sux!!!..by the way..i got home safe and sound.

That shouldn't hurt it, but I don't know why you would want to drive that way.
Mostly clutches give a warning and start slipping before they go out. If it's not slipping, it could be not engaging or disengaging on account of bad linkage or something . Bad springs will also make one slip or not work properly.
The mainest prolem with clutches is when people abuse them trying to be a play racer.

When youre in neutral, dont keep the left foot on the clutch bedal though. You'll know when the clutch is going when you feel it not engage as fast, or bobs along the way. Smokin a clutch is easy.... just lay it up at redline and release. You'll notice a distinct smell... almost like rubber.
