Rear deck speakers that sound like 10"s
I searched a little but wasn't sure exactly how to word it, so hopefully this hasn't been covered before. I have two 10s (Pioneer IMPP 350) in my trunk with a heavy a$$ speaker box being pushed by a 200w amp. What I would like to do is ditch the weight of the speakers and the speaker box, but I don't want to lose the sound. Now the subs that I have get plenty loud enough for me, and I don't need to be heard coming from a mile away. Are there any speakers out there that would replace our rear deck speakers being pushed by say a 100w or 200w amp and still sound comparable to my 10s. Or is that just wishful thinking? Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated.

sorry man, i doubt its possible, but i think we would all like that too. see, the 10 gets its souund from the pure surface area of the cone, among other things. size is part of the reason they go lower than smaller ones, hit harder and do all the tings we buy them for. id say dont worry about the weight too much unless youre a hard-core drag stip race, but if you were one of those you wouldnt care about a stereo. if youre worried about the weight, just buy an intake, or an exhaust theyll add about 1-1.5hp each and the motor will also sound better. you could also add some stickers theyre worth 10hp.lol. but seriously, i think mowhawk or white rabbit would agree with what i said about size, and theyll prolly have more to add. hope i could help
what upsets you more the fact that the box takes up space or the weight. like the other guy said ours cars are not fast so unless you are hardcore the weight is not an issue. is it in a prefab box?? or custom built. you could switch to just the 1 ten and a small box or even do a search on here and there is a guy making small fiberglass enclosure's that sit in front of the taillight that hardly take up any room. from what mowhack lol has said in the past he got the best bass response from a set of blaupunkt 6x9's for mid-bass/bass and some other companys sell just 6x9's for this purpose so maybe a good set with 100 watts and some foam baffles might give you enough to be happy. one of those try it and see type deals.

I like the replies all of you guys have given so far, but I think white97ex may have something. That's along the lines of what I was thinking, but the question is, does something like this actually exist? I know mohawk is on vacation, hopefully he'll see this when he gets back. Whiterabbit, got any input?
free air sub yes. what that means is it uses the trunk as your box. so to do this you would have to cut holes for a 8 or 10 to go in your rear deck. prob a pain in the *** to line it up with the rear deck grills and get a flat spot back there. or just a single sheet of mdf that goes across where the pas thru is behind the rear seats so it seals the trunk from the cabin and put them there. both ways suck and your better off doin soemthing else. what is your main complaint?

My main complaints are the space that their taking up, plus any weight reduction would be nice as well. I have more room inside my car to put things, than in my trunk. For instance, the other day a co-worker gave me a side table for my house, and it would have fit in the trunk had the speakers not been there, but I ended up putting it in the front seat running the risk of tearing sh#@ up. I know what you're thinking, just take the speakers out when you want to move something, but that just starts to be a pain in the a$$. I'm not really much of a bass head. I mostly listen to rock, so I don't need that much bass all the time, just a nice, thick sound. I was looking at some speakers yesterday. I believe they were Alpines (6.5 or 6x9). They ran about $300, but some guy did a review on them and said that the sound was so good that they were comparable to cheap 10" subs. This may work for me since I'm not into big bass most of the time. Got any suggestions on other brands that may make speakers with that sort of description.
two words... MA Audio
they sell 6.5's that are about 3.5's deep, so you might have to modify the trunk springs, but they are something like 200w speakers but they are designed to act like subs. the depth has to do with it and so does the special construction they use, and they are all chrome underneath so they look really great as well.

from the two that ben posted, id go with the kenwood because the kicker, from what it sounds like, is made for your doors, but "can do it if it has to" free air capability. the kenwood on the otherhand sounds like its made to do the job youre looking for
