Need advice on rear speakers/rear fill?

Ok, in my previous messages I stated that I installed Polk Audio Co-axial 6.5" in the front doors. So far I've left the rear stock 6.5" speakers in my sedan and I don't have a sub.

After reading a bunch of messages and links regarding "rear fill", it seems like I won't get too much benefit from high quality rear speakers. The sound is already vastly improved over the stock setup.

What choices do I have if I want to continue to improve my sound system?

Amp+sub?
Better rear deck speakers?
Both?

I already have another pair of the same Polk Audio Co-axial 6.5" sitting in a box right now.

some SQ competitors use stock rear speakers. runnign yorus off the deck, i would first worry about your bass, which you have no frequency response of yet. you can worry about rearfill later, if you wish. thats what id do, anyways.

1.With coaxials in the doors, i would suggest getting a pair of tweeters mounted somewhere high or aimed high to get your soundstage higher. I wouldn't have gotten coaxials for my frontstage unless I was making kickpanels for them.

2. The AMP and Sub would also help. Try to get a multi-channel one so that you can use that to power your fronts and a sub.

3. Leave the rear speakers. Rearfills are really useless if you have a kick *** front stage!

coaxials make isntallation much simpler, and i in fact would not install coaxials in kicks, somply becasue of problems with frequency response and cone flexing that just doesnt happen with components. why make a nice stage for terrible response music?

i find that a 4 channel amp doesnt provide wnough power for a sub, and too much for the fronts. dedicated amps for each can be much more versatile.....

rearfill is useless i fyou have enough midbass support for the front. that is all. if you dont, then you will have frequency gaps in your response, whihc is far wose than having a muddy stage or distorting midbass from teh back.

if you want to keep things running off the HU, a good 300 watt amp and a 12" Sub should give you some decent bup and keep things resonably in balance...

I guess some decent low end would do me good. I probably want to stick with the stock headunit and then keep my Polk fronts and stock rears. I'm not into big bumping, but some low end to make the music richer would be my goal.

Would a 10" sub suffice or is 12" more ideal for my goal?

300W sounds like a lot! What is the minimum that I can get by with.

Any recommendations for amps and subs?

I'm all new to this subwoofer thing...

Well a 12" subs would be better due it's ability cover the lower frequencies better than a 10" Sub. a nice little 50Wrmsx2 amp should do..if it can bridged to a 4ohm mono load. That will give you 200Wrms. And this should offer a bit of bump..while not getting crazy. For subs.. I'd reccomend stay on a budget and grab up a Cerwin Vega HED 12..they bump good.under $100 and sound pretty decent too.

For amps.. Kenwood, Pioneer, anything relatively cheap and reliable will do...

have you seen Andy Groce's install circa late 90's? Hes an old iasca competitor using fultron aria coaxials in his kickpanels...pretty succesful as well. Some coaxials perform better than some components. You also get better time alignement with some coincidental speakers. It all depends on what coaxials you choose to work with and the install.

this depends on the amp and the sub you use. There are some subs which dont require as much power and a four channel amp can be much simpler to install. Tuning will also be simple-just play with the fader and gain controls. Just following the KISS principle. Klam mentioned later that he doesnt want big bumpin so this would suffice.

thats what I said...if your frontstage kicks assm you dont need rearfills.

good suggestion here mohawk

my choice for a budget low freq: $200-250

Subs: digital designs 2010a or 2012a from www.ddaudio.com (less than $150)
amps: usacoustics USX2080 less than $100 from thezeb.com
