Rough idle or surge - [information] beware of different gaskets - EGR hole
2003 1.7 engine surge and rough idle was caused buy the egr return port. Rebuilt the engine and use the gasket set found on line for the engine. After the syart up the engine wouldn't idle and had a surging problem, after removal of the intake manifold it was found that there were no egr recirculation holes in the metal gasket. This would not allow the egr to function properly and caused a rough idle and surging. Tough to find after the fact. Replacement cured the evils.
