According to the mechanic, it's a broken input or output rod. For a few days, it seemed to be slipping, and then there was a smell of something burning, and now it won't engage the clutch at all.

I'm not sure about anything, but it seems to be shiftable -- just doesn't engage any gears. I think the mechanic seemed convinced in that the car could be pushed forward or backward while in gear.

Sounds more like complete clutch failure and not a bad transmission. I would be astonished if the transmission was actually broken. A new clutch isn't too expensive, replacing it takes quite a bit of labor though.

That's what I hoped, but not according to the mechanic. Maybe I don't know enough to ask the right questions, but appreciate the advice; But I've relied on this mechanic for a long time to provide reliable advice.
