Thank you; I should have read them. Car is at mechanic today and just learned that the tranny was shot. Hope to get pics tomorrow and will post.

Not likely the transmission is shot, unless some how there was no fluid in it while operating.

What are the issues?
-popping out of gear?
-not going into gear?
-no power?

According to the mechanic, it's a broken input or output rod. For a few days, it seemed to be slipping, and then there was a smell of something burning, and now it won't engage the clutch at all.

I'm not sure about anything, but it seems to be shiftable -- just doesn't engage any gears. I think the mechanic seemed convinced in that the car could be pushed forward or backward while in gear.

Sounds more like complete clutch failure and not a bad transmission. I would be astonished if the transmission was actually broken. A new clutch isn't too expensive, replacing it takes quite a bit of labor though.

That's what I hoped, but not according to the mechanic. Maybe I don't know enough to ask the right questions, but appreciate the advice; But I've relied on this mechanic for a long time to provide reliable advice.
