Sons 01 just pooped yesterday, revved up whiling driving, no power and pulled off road, he said he was able to restart, placed in gear and it wanted to go but he didnt feel confident about it, had it towed home and hope to get a scanner on it soon......its got about 112K and has been throwing the TC code, its had a slight flare in trans since we got it 1 1/2 yrs ago...... Hope its something thats not gonna drain the wallet...

If the trans is gone on the 16 yr old, whats the avg I can expect to pay for new Trans? Is it worth donating or junkyard for a few $$?

Not sure which way we are going but I dont see putting much $$ into a repair....Thx

Do you think you want to DIY the trans, or have a shop do it?
Reman from Honda? Reman from elsewhere? Used (crapshoot)? Rebuild your trans?
Call around and price the job with a few local shops.

OP: since you didn't mention it I'll ask. Is the ATF currently or before issue at the proper level? Any ATF leaks? Did you try to drive it after it was towed? Which transmission code?

No leakes and ATF level is good.

Had a friend check today, P0740 code is still the only one showing, theres whining noise coming from trans area, he and a Honda mech he knows feels like its def the trans/TCC, we swapped the clutch solenoid since it was an easy "check"...no luck. The car did let us place in gear, the whining fades away, was able to drive down st and turn around, a few minutes later tried again, gears wouldnt engage, just revved up, eventually took the gear and was able to park again.

I havent called any shops yet but he feels it will be a least in the $1200 range, def dont want to put that into the car, not knowing if any other issues will kick off.

Looking now to see what a good AS IS price is for an 01 Civic needing a trans???? Will check local CL but welcome any price input, thx.

Pulling one from a currently running car that shifts properly would be best but, also hard to find. Can check this site for pulled ones: http://www.car-part.com/ , Ebay, or local salvage yards. Another option is to convert to manual: http://www.7thgenhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18057

Can try this stuff: https://seafoamsales.com/hydra-trans-tune/ it's seems to be geared towards cleaning valve bodies but it might work for torque converter. If you decide to use it just drain the equal amount (16 fluid ounces) of present ATF and add can of Transtune. Lose $20 if they don't work and might gain some time if they do. If you use either or both please report back with results.

As far as selling "as is" since there's 112k (very low for year made) you could choose to sell it all together, engine and shell seperately or for parts. Selling whole depends on the interior/exterior condition as far as price point. As a shell might be difficult because 7th gens aren't known/desired for modding like previous generation.

I wouldn't mess with any of those additives. The problem is that the filter is clogged and it can't generate enough pressure for the clutches to engage. The only way to fix it is to replace the filter.

That may be correct but, if the OP is paying someone to open or remove the transmission then might as well replace clutch pack, clean valve bodies, replace filter and possibly replace torque convertor. Wouldn't want to pay to open again if the filter alone doesn't solve the issue.

I agree the internal filter is clogged, but that restriction causes the pump to 'starve' of fluid. That's what causes the loss of hydraulic system pressure.

If something happened inside the trans bad enough to clog up a screen door, the entire trans needs to come apart to fix the real problem.

Filter clogging is just a symptom.
What caused the filter to clog?
Trans has a bigger problem, a root cause that needs addressed.

OP said it had a TC code (probably P0740) along with flare between shifts which might indicate a worn 3rd clutch or restricted solenoid screens along with a torque converter clutch problem.

It's internal. You would have to remove the transmission and split the case to reach it. At that point it's pointless to not go through the entire trans and address the root cause(s) of the failure.


A short while ago a customer with 190k on one of those cars spent the money to get a Honda reman transmission. I didn't expect that at all LOL
And a head gasket and timing belt. And many of the oil leaks fixed.
Cheaper than a new car.

I wouldn't use additives in my car either unless the transmission was shot and there's nothing to lose. Seems like that's where the OP is at. Even at that it's very unlikely additives would work but, I figured I'd mention it as cheap option. OP if you go the replacement route try to get one from an '04 or '05 model year.

I agree it needs a full rebuild. I was just saying I didn't think fluids would do anything for the filter, so probably not worth it.

Cheaper than another working 7th gen?

Thx for the info, have it on CL now for anyone wanting a project, listed for $1200, is that realistic with trans issue?

It got my son through Senior year in HS, just not needing to add repair cost at this time, he has no issues taking over my 07 Mustang as a summer DD.

If no luck on CL i guess I will look into scrap money.

Seems like a fair obo price with the low engine mileage. Someone willing to do the work themselves and throw in a $200 used transmission might make a few bucks off it if they flip it. Expect to get low ball offers of $700 or less though. Probably can expect to sell it for $1000 or so.
