1399 and 1379 code
P1399 and P1379 aren't supposed to exist for a 98 Civic. However, a P1399 is usually a misfire code.

bent valve??
right after I got the timing belt done too
That makes it likely.

Compression check first
Then a leakdown test if compression is low, figure out where it's losing compression.

Decide what step is next based on those results..

my mechanic did all those and everything is good. its gotta be a head gasket or valve. should I just a get a used motor or have it fixed? what do you think is cheaper? you can hear the ticking when its idling too.

my mechanic did all those and everything is good.
My compression gauge is not marked in any scale of good.

its gotta be a head gasket or valve.
How can this be? Your mechanic declared "everything is good".
SURELY his gauge would have said BAD if one of these was amiss......Amirite?
should I just a get a used motor or have it fixed?
Fix what? What is wrong?
Remember now, your mechanic declared "everything is good".
what do you think is cheaper?
Accurate diagnosis, along with educated and informed decisions.
Then correct and effective repairs.

you can hear the ticking when its idling too.
So.....What did your mechanic say about it?

I'm sure it will.

Re: 98 civic ex

I had a similar problem with those exact 2 codes, what it turned out to be was the wire going to plug 3 got loose over time and wasnt making very good connection.
