Need help with 97 civic smoking
My civic 97 lx started to smoke a bit. so I tested it for good compression it was good.
at first I was going to replace the valve stem seals, but I had a vetch head for parts so I put that on.. I think its a z6 head and d16y7 block..
when I got it started it smoked bad.. way more smoke then b4 I f*cked with it.
so again I tested for good compression and it was the same [good].
next I got the new valve stem seals and put them in this new/old z6 head that I put on..
the old valve stem seals looked in bad shape when I took them out but it smokes just as bad with the new ones..
The sparkplugs from all cylinders looked wet and black [new plugs] after a small test run.
not sure if its oil but it looks like it. So I tested compression again looks ok.
If I have new stem seals and good compression where is the oil coming from?? Into all cylinders?
Maybe I should just getting more valve stem seals and fixing the head that was on it from the start.

Re: Need help with 97 civic smoking
did you pull the plug out of the block when doing the head swap? What color is the smoke?
If the PCV valve is clogged or not working right, it'll make it smoke pretty bad.
My Mini-me also smokes badd after doing the head swap, but my rod bearings are almost spun, and the added compression from the head made my rings bad.

PCV is usually a black plastic valve stuck between 2 runners of the intake manifold, it has a hose running from the bottom to the black box on the back of the engine, and a hose from the top part to a nipple on the intake manifold.
Re: Need help with 97 civic smoking
The smoke stoped on its own...
it will only smoke if i rev it high but my intake man needs a new gasket and im hopeing it will fix all my probs.
Fliptard.... what plug r you talking bout?

Re: Need help with 97 civic smoking
My '97 EX had a similar problem, high RPM's created a lot of smoke. So i went and bought a piston re ring set which had new rings and a complete gasket set and i changed the piston rings on it, no more burning oil.
If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Smokes at higher RPM: Sounds like rings to me. Stuck or worn out.
A compression test cannot tell you the condition of the oil control rings.
They could be completely missing and you'd never catch it on a compression test.
