Low Oil and Vtec Solenoid Issues p2646
Low Oil and Vtec Solenoid Issues p2646
I was driving along and noticed a check engine light. I pulled over and pulled code p2646 which is for to low of oil pressure to operate the vtec solenoid. I decided that I would continue home for another 250 miles of driving. At no point did I see a low oil level light.
The next day I changed my oil and found that I had about 1 quart of oil. After changing my oil I was able to clear the check engine light with no problems. Low oil levels had caused the p2646 code.
I am now concerned about the 250 miles of driving with low oil and possibly no or limitited oil circulation in the engine. This was actually a new engine and I had expected to get a few years out of it.
More specifically, my question is...
Event though I had low enough oil levels to cause p2646, did I still have sufficient oil circulation in the engine to not cause serious damage?
Or, was damage done to the bearings and cam assembly such that I need to trade this POS in very soon?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

The only idiot light for oil is the red "Too Late" light.
Looks like a gravy boat.

You COULD have already had a consumption problem or issue (or leak?) if your oil got that low.... (Up to 1 quart per 1000 miles is considered acceptable consumption. Not ideal, but acceptable. You have to keep it full to avoid engine damage though. That's on you.)
You need to check the oil level at every gas fill up, and refill the oil when needed (stated in any owners manual)
You should expect even more consumption now that the oil has been allowed to get nearly empty.
Many parts inside rely upon oil splash to get their lube, and super low levels take much of that away.

You should have check your oil and not continue to drive after pulling that code..
Only time will tell if there is damage done. Generally if you dont get the "gravy boat" light you are ok..lol gravy boat..
However you should probably figure out where you oil is going..
