97 civic ex transmission sensor?

I have a 97 civic ex just did a motor swap & had a jdm D16A put in but now its leaking gear oil i think from the axle seals. I wanted to know if a check engine light would come on when the gear oil gets to low?

Re: 97 civic ex transmission sensor?

If it is a manual trans, there will be no idiot light at all. The trans will grind to death from lack of lubrication, and yet the computer cannot see it.

This gets expensive in a hurry.

An automatic trans won't turn on the check engine light until it starts slipping, misses shifts, or won't engage at all.

Neither the engine or transmission have any sensors to tell the computer about fluid level.
The computer can't see anything until something it does watch doesn't work as expected.

Re: 97 civic ex transmission sensor?

i pulled the fill plug on the trans yesterday & it poured oil out. i just wanted to check the oil level since its got a leak but from what ive read i thought it wasnt suppose to pour that much out. 1/4 quart - 1/2 quart is about what came out. It was def full. I thought it was to be filled to the fill plug only since i dont see how you could fill it over the fill plug hole.

Re: 97 civic ex transmission sensor?

Maybe you pulled the wrong plug. The whole trans holds less than 2 quarts.

The fill plug is very close to, and even with, the axle/CV joint on the right (passengers) side.
Has a 17mm hex for a normal wrench on it.

Re: 97 civic ex transmission sensor?

They probably filled it through the dipstick hole.... Bunch of dipsticks.

yes thats the one i pulled & the drain plug is at the bottom. I dont know how the shop over filled it but it should be only filled to the fill plug correct? Im going to keep a check on the oil level until i cant get the axle seals replaced.

Some people can go to an awful lot of trouble to complicate something simple.

Maybe it is leaking BECAUSE it is overfilled?

yes.

Maybe it was overfilled because they knew it would leak?
