crazy vibration when accelerating
crazy vibration when accelerating
hey guys, I've got a crazy vibration problem with my car that I am trying to diagnose. it's a 2003 civic ex automatic with 256,000 miles on it. the car seems to be vibrating only when I accelerate or am at a constant speed on level ground , but it ceases when I am downhill and off of the excelerator.
it starts off around 40 miph, but quits between 50 and 60, and picks up again really hard around 60-65.
I'm thinking torque converter? What do you guys think?

Re: crazy vibration when accelerating
I have a crazy vibration when I first start off driving, and reverse. I was told it was the starting clutch by the Honda house. But I found a busted motor mount. I fixed that but it still does it. Can anyone tell me what it is? The wheels don't pop when I turn. Could I may have a worn CV joint since the mount laid lower that usual? The transmission is fine, not leaking or burning fluid. It shifts fine. Please help, thanks!

CVT gets "start clutch shudder" only upon takeoff. Either forward or backwards. Shudder only happens AS the clutch applies during initial acceleration (during its "slip" period), then stops shaking when the clutch is fully engaged.
Bad mounts can amplify it or aggravate it, and bad mounts by themselves can make it vibrate even without the clutch shudder. A bad mount usually only makes it shudder in ONE direction, not both forward AND backward.
Since you posted absolutely NO info about your particular car, I'd say change the fluid to start with.
(Use the correct CVT fluid, wrong fluid can cause it too. Thanks, Speedylube.)
All the early cars seemed to do it eventually, to some degree. Some are worse than others. Most people just ignore it.
Some of the CVT cars had a recall on the start clutch. Some get a certain procedure done to them. I would need your full VIN# to check on recalls and find more info.

I had this problem, and the solution was the change my wheel bearings. Do you have a violent vibration when you brake as well. If so then it's definitely your bearings
