Civic 2007 fluid leak

We had some spotting on the driveway, it smelled to me like oil. We took it to the mechanic and he said it was the power steering. He is recommending replacing the PS unit.

Is there some advice you could give me on how we could diagnose and repair this?

Thanks ahead of time.

Define "unit". The word is not descriptive.
Try: Pump, gear, hose, reservoir, pressure hose, etc.
Ask your mechanic to raise the car and SHOW you the source of the fluid leak. Usually when they leak, there is a huge dripping mess.
Everything related to the power steering is done from under the car or through the wheelwell.

Get under the car and see where the leak is coming from.
I'm assuming from the first part of this post that you are not mechanically inclined.
I guess I could tell you to get out your credit card and pay someone to fix it.

Also, second opinions can be valuable.
