Hey guys i just bought a 2000 civic si and the guy that i bought the car off of lost the key to it. I have bought a new tumbler and key for it but in all the how to articles Ive read it says that you must have the key to turn the ignition to accessory to remove tumbler. My question is is there a way to get the tumbler out with out the key? Thanks

Not easily. It doesn't come out like many "American" cars.

You have to remove the entire column lock housing from the steering column first.
Then disassemble it.
You will need a way to remove some really tiny roll pins.
Then you will have to pick the lock (manipulate each tumbler one at a time to get the cylinder out of its barrel housing).


Here is MY idea of easy:

Get the title for the car in your hands.
Make SURE the numbers all match.
Call your dealership, make sure they have a key to fit your car.
Take the title there and have a new key cut by VIN number and key code.
Should be cheap since the car doesn't have Immobilizer.
Take the new key home and start your car.
Done.
MUCH easier IMO.

Well since I have already bought the tumbler and key for the car I think Ill just go and take the ignition off the car and back home "pick" the lock and bring it back when its fixed. If i cant get it then i guess its a trip to the honda dealer.

Take a hammer and a center punch. And a #2 Phillips, and a flat blade pocket screwdriver.
The hardware securing the column lock assembly has "break away" bolts.
There is no head for a wrench.
You have to turn them out with a punch and hammer.
Good luck reinstalling them. Just replace the bolts with new (usually special order).

I still think having the new key cut by code will be much less trouble, no matter how much you spent on the parts you already have.

A good lock shop could probably cut you a key by code too.

Well after a hour or so of frustration and needing to get my car moved I took the switch off the back of the ignition and used a screwdriver to start the car it seems that the steering wheel lock doesn't work on this car so i got off lucky and I am now able to start and move my car. Thanks for the help guys.

what should I do previous owner los key and tried to replace tumbler with one from auto zone had no success so in order to start my car I use key for my Mitsubishi to put in this white plastic thing hanging from steering coulumn and it turns over fine any suggestions to get key and locks to fit key on the doors so I can lock the car

I agree, replace tumblers only if key gets stuck in and wont come out.

Take your VIN number to the dealer, and probably a proof of your ownership, they can cut a key without an actual key present.
