All 4 cylinders Misfiring
Hi guys got a quick questions driving home yesterday my engine came on.
I scan it at home and all 4 cylinder are misfiring I've search around and cant really find what to do I am going to change the spark plugs and coil packs over the weekend. my questions is can a bad timing belt cause this ?
Thanks.
By the way I have a 2002 civic ex

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
i have a set of 4 working coil packs for $15 shipped if interested (100k miles on them) for 01-05 civic. the easy solutions for misfiring is spark plugs and coil packs, but after that it gets more complicated. timing belt could have skipped a tooth and thrown the timing off. could also be clogged injectors or low fuel pressure due to bad fuel pump. hard to say for sure. im guessing the car doesnt drive?

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
Can you send me your paypal address I will buy them off you.
the Car does drive it actually starts perfect still and I am not in limp mode even though the Engine light is on.
I am having the timing belt/water pump change this weekend since I've been delaying it for a while,
Car has over 115k and haven't changed it yet.

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
All four cylinders misfiring has to be something that affects all so I don't think all coils or spark plugs went bad at once. I had a misfire on all four because my stock intake was becoming loose and I disassemble it and reassembled it. So it could be air something wrong with your fuel pressure or like gearbox said your timing. Either way I recommend not driving the car to much.

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
my paypal is berberoglu@yahoo.com if you still want the coils. something cheap to try altho i have my doubts that they all went bad together unless there was a voltage surge. even a single cylinder misfire should be shaking the car noticably. i cant imagine all four misfiring and the car even staying at idle. if the car is driving fairly normal, it cannot actually be all four cylinders misfiring. maybe some kind of computer problem or slightly off timing (ignition or cam).

Thank you I will still pick those up from you and try it out. yeah the car drives almost like normal and has to problem with idle at all. it shakes a little but not as bad as you would think. if it wasn't for the engine like you will barely be able to tell something is wrong.

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
there are unfortunately many things that cause misfires. but if the car is driving pretty much normal, you can prolly rule out fuel issues. wrong plugs (anything but ngk or denso) can cause problems, so could bad engine ground wires or a bad battery terminal connection (loose corroded). is the engine light flashing? have you listened to the exhaust sound at idle and do you hear uneven or strange pulses of air? are you losing coolant from the reservoir or radiator? could be small headgasket leak, exhaust leak (header, esp if you have LX), clogged cat converter, etc. even a bad oxygen sensor altho it should have its own engine code.
Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
if all 4 coils were bad the thing wouldn't start, and IAC valve can cause multiple cylinder misfires without triggering a code sometimes as well as a bad cam sensor, but start with basics, you're wasting money on the coil packs but plugs would be a good idea

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
ive had a small leak that caused coolant to pool into one cylinder and cause misfires until the engine warmed up and burned the coolant, and i guess sealed the gasket be expanding. eventually it will get worse tho. but if he is not losing coolant i doubt its that.

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
Hi guys thanks for all the response. the engine light is just on not flashing.
about the coolant nope not losing it from anywhere car doesn't over heat
I dont think its a clogged cat converter because I don't have one, I have an ex and it has a high flow on it but I can check on it.The battery terminals are all clean the last time I changed my spark plugs was about 50k ago. and they are NGK think I should change them out?
my gas mileage is still the same from what I can see yesterday I notice it was starting to shake a bit so I am not driving it anymore.
From the exhaust at idle sounds pretty normal.
Which 02 sensor can it be?
The only code I am getting is for all four cylinders.
I hope I answer everyone questions
and thank you for all the reply's.
I talked to a mechanic yesterday and I was told it could be the timing belt slipped a tooth. but I won't know until they take it off.
oh and when I scanned the computer it did say ignition but didn't see any code.

Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
I am curious if you ever figured out what was wrong with your car I have an 01 LX having the same sort of issues, Misfire on 2 and 4 however mine shakes like a mother it also lacks power in a big way just messing with it I pulled the TPS plug off and it smoothes everything out but for the obvious reason i can't see how it responds for throttle response any Ideas I have checked all the stuff that is listed in this thread as well coolant etc. I pulled the timing cover all looked right there i am just stumped right now.
Re: All 4 cylinders Misfiring
im also having misfirings... my car has been making popping/snapping noises whenever i go over 3k RPM. ive lost a lot of power compared to its normal state. i have pretty much diminished my cash though due to my mom needing money for bills, have you tried the distributor cap and rotor?
