clearing headlights for POS 4 door civic to hard
allright well I cleared my head lights on my 2k2 2 door civic like 2 weeks ago, it was easy and took no time at all. So my friend asked me to help him clear his head lights on his 2k1 4 door civic, and i said ok because i thought it would be just as easy as mine. Then the problems start when i tried to pry open the lights. Now i dont know if it was the grey silicon (compared to my black silicon) but the darn thing would not come off. so my friend decides to get a blade i cut the silicon so he can pry the light easier and the blade slips and he cuts himself. Now this was no little f**king cut, It was about 3/4 of and inch deep and like 2 inches wide. then i have to get him inside my 1 month old civic and drive his *** to the hospital while he has a towel around the cut trying to stop the bleeding. So what i am trying to say is if you have a 4 door civic dont try clearing your headlights its to much f**king work.
O yea, then the next day I have to spend the whole day clearing his head lights it took me about 6 hours total, and he got blood on my baby's seats. F**K

its hella easy me and victor did it today the hard part was parking the car on the drive way
a friend of mine asked me to do hers for her and it took us a little bit longer than it took for my coupe (2 hrs for hers, 1 1/2hr for mine), but with a hair dryer and a screwdriver, and our brute force we got em apart and done. You guys will know better next time to be careful with knives near your hands!
<< my headlights were freakin baked >>
And that's how you're supposed to make it easier to open. Put'em in the oven for 7-8 minutes @ 250 degrees. For a sedan... this makes it a LOT easier as the silicone sealant is different than on the coupe's headlights.
Coupe's silicone = tar-like substance that never ever dries
Sedan's silicone = gummy-like substance that is very much like old dry gum.
Putthing the headlight in the oven helps a lot.
I think this site needs an updated version of DIY clearing headlights. I would be willing to contribute to it.

I will admit it took me about 5 hours total to clear the lights on my 4 door. That grey adhesive is a pain to get apart. Just points to the superior engineering from Japan(4 door plant) as opposed to what they use here in the US(2 door plant).
Sorry to hear about that experience that would suck to have your friend cut him self then he ends up getting blood on your car. Yeah the Sedans are tuffer to clear I have heard a lot of people say that.
But yeah good thing I read a lot of posts on the DIY Clears before I did mine the tips other people did wrong really helped me make my project a success.

I did my 4 door and it took forever, like 5 hrs or something total.... The bumper was a joke to take off, and I even did it without putting the car up on jack stands or anything... just slid myself under there. The peeling apart on the sedan is a million times harder than it is on the coupe. Everyone is right that DIY does need an update. I was reading it and then kicking myself thinking I was stupid b ut then my cousin told me that the glue used in Japan (4dr plant) is a lot better than the glue used in the US (2dr plant), thus making clearning out headlights on the sedan a much harder task. Oh well its worth it... looks fat and not many people have it done. The civic is mostly used by my sister anyway so all her guy friends are like wow you are into clearing lights and stuff.... how did you do that... blah blah blah. She just usually laughs at them and tells them haha don't you wish your head lights looked like mine.. That is my personal satisfaction, just hearing that.

<Silly question, If the car is a POS (which I don't doubt that it is) why perform mods?>

Man! you guys are getting me worried. I have my last exam today and then 2 1/2 weeks before the summer session starts. I plan to clear my lights on one of those days. I have a sedan and have been reading that it's kinda tough to clear them. I thought about not doing it but since I bought the silicone like 2 weeks ago, I guess I am already obligated.

Just did my sedan. The first one was a pain but on the second I was a professional. My wife helped me out with it. I'd pry with the screw driver and she'd cut the sealant with a razor. No problems with the adhesive getting on the chrome. A drop of sweat from forehead did land on it but I just let it dry and you would never know it was there. I thought the tougest part of the whole thing was sealing the suckers back up. The black housing of the light was a little bent up from prying the thing apart, so it didn't come back together all perfectly neat and flush. I just used a truck load of silicone on em. I am going to wash the car tomorrow and see what happens.
By the way, this mod is absoutely worth the time! I love the way my vic looks now!

Yes, I have a 4 door 2001 Civic and I also think its extreamly difficult. While the glue isn't easy coming off I suggest putting them in the oven for 2 minutes at 300F then they pull apart, however the trick is putting the lights back together this is when I stuck a screw driver completly through my hand and there was blood everywhere. so please think about at high caution before attempting this although it looks alot better.........p.s. dont touch the inside of the lights they will scratch and smug easally(this is Mikes wife he's too embarassed to type this:laugh
OWWW!! I'm having flashbacks to my 4-door clearning experience. I stabbed straight through my hand, I still have no feeling in half my left hand and a pretty nasty scar. The worst part was trying to finish the job with one hand and in alot of pain. So I didn't put as much effort into the last headlight and now I have a moisture leak. Going to have to do this all over again.... That gray goop is a bitch.
