Question RPM guage not working correctly

I had to replace my guage cluster a while back because the lights blew out on them. The new guage cluster I got works great and everything is accurate and all the lights work correctly. The only problem is that the RPM guage does not function correctly. It gives a consistently low reading. When I idle it reads 400RPM when I know I should be about 800RPM. As I am driving I know what RPM I should be at. When I hit VTEC around 5000RPM, the guage only reads about 2500RPM. I usually cruise around town in third gear and know that at 35mph, I'm usually at about 2500RPM. The tach reads around 1500RPM. I don't understand why the tach is not accurate. The speedometer works perfectly. Many times on highways or back roads the radar dectors with readouts are accurate (to +/- 1mph) so I know that is fine. Any reason as to why my tachometer is not functioning properly? Any thing I can do to try and fix this? (Except buy a new guage cluster or new RPM guage?)

Thanks

Re: RPM guage not working correctly

the only thing i could think of is a low voltage to the needle motor the lights can be replaced in the old gauge cluster too if you still have it check your voltage on the tachometer relative to the voltage for spedo if they are half then theirs your problem, the issue is getting voltage to the spedo as i can only think to get the car moving or on jack stands or even a dyno and check them, i have a 2002 civic lx and my dash is apart so if you give me which wire and what rpm i can check mine if you want and tell me how you got voltage to it. granted i might not tear my car apart but ill do my best to give you a hand, I'm a personal hater of electronic stuff because of how stupid some stuff is, so give me a shout or e-mail,I'll try to check in on here tomorrow night. Lonwel e-mail: k_razzy_monkey@hotmail.com give me a shout and make sure to include the code 12312 in the e-mail subject thanks (just to make sure it doesn't go in the junk mail)

Hey thanks for your help. I do not have my old guage cluster unfourtunately so I have nothing to compare it to. I have to bring in my car to get the fog light wiring fixed and I am just going to have him check it out. I agree totally, I am also a hater of electronics and wiring.
