Radiator fan issues

For some reason my fan wont come on now. Here is what ive found so far:

- jumped the thermo switch on the T-stat and the fan turns on
- new T-stat
- fuses and relays are good

so why wont this fan turn on? I was thinking of maybe just wiring it up to a toggle switch under my dash to turn it on when i need to. Where would be the best place to tap into the wires and run a line to a switch? would it be OK to run a wire strait from the battery to the fan?

Re: Radiator fan issues

maybe fan sensor went bad? try changing it first (this sensor is different from the engine temp sensor). but both are located near the thermostat in the cooling passage.

i was not able to find a pic, but try to trace the wiring back from the fan motor. it should lead to the sensor.

Re: Radiator fan issues

im not exactly sure on the test procedure for the older civics, but i imagine you should be able to put the sensor end in some heated water and see if the resistance changes using a multimeter to measure ohms. i think most sensors trigger around 200 degrees F. but if the fan works when you jump it, then most likely the sensor is bad.

Re: Radiator fan issues

Ok so how about an easy fix.....

I was thinking of running a wore from the battery to a 15AMP fuse and then to a toggle switch then to the fan. That way i can just turn it on whenever i need it. I have these things and dont need to to buy anything that way.

what you think?

Re: Radiator fan issues

you can do that but first make sure the switch can handle that much power (the fan can pull alot of amps and easily kill most switches they sell at the store). usually for hi amp draw devices, a relay harness is used. dont forget a fuse on the power wire within 12 inches of the battery.

Re: Radiator fan issues

hmmm...didnt think it would draw that much power. Anybody that has done this before have a setup they used and can share?
