17s on a 2001 Civic LX?
17s on a 2001 Civic LX?
I just recently acquired a 2001 Civic LX 4dr and I want to get 17" wheels. Can anyone recommend any wheel brands that would fit as well as tire sizes that won't cause rubbing or get in the way of my brakes. My car has stock suspension and I don't plan on dropping. Also, does anyone have experience on how the ride is on 17s? If 16s are a better ride/fit I'm open to suggestions, thank you.

The ride on 17's is crap. It's real bad for your suspension. It will make your D17 engine work overtime. This topic has been covered extensively, do a little searching. It's up to you but I would not go much bigger than 16's on a civic. Just make sure the wheels are as light as possible. Also, your going to get some wheel gap when you put rims on so you should probably lower the car as well. Just so it does not look silly.

If you want to stick with 17's, and still want ride quality, I would go with 215/45/17 on Enkei Racing RPF1's (wheels are only 15 lbs each). Wheel gap would actually decrease 0.4 inches with that tire size, and the speedometer reading is still within acceptable specs.

get 17s the ride is fine. i have 17s and its not that bad just avoid potholes which you probably already do anyways so nothing will change. the only thing bad is yes you feel bumps more but you get used to it and its not that bumpy to me and my roads arent that great. i have 205/40/17 and i think it rides good. you could go bigger than 17s if you felt like it. its your choice. if you feel like 17s dont listen to people saying the ride is crappy cause its really not that bad. look on craigslist for rims first sometimes you can find a good deal on some rims.

I have 215/45/17 tires on mine and the ride isn't much different than stock. the engine doesn't work overtime. acceleration feels the same as my stock 14" steelies. braking feels the same. cornering is hugely improved on the 215's. the only down side is the reduced wear life due to being an aggressive tire. typically low profile tires are softer compounds. i've got 30k miles on my current set, but they're done. i got 70kmi on my stock set.

yes i know chrome is heavier. what i was disagreeing with was your general statement that "bigger rims and low profile tires on a honda civic is that your gas mileage will drop about 4 miles/gallon." that is not and will not be everyone's results. will be dependent on the rim/tire combo. that's why i disagreed.
at any rate, for another visual, here's my 02 LX with 215/45/17's.
