vtec: noob questions part 1

I did a lot of bolt on stuff with a 2001 corolla. i know how to install stuff, i just lack knowledge in the technical area of hondas.

i just picked up a 1998 civic sedan ex. it has a d16y8. webpages and other people say it has vtec. if my car has vtec, well... where is it? and i thought vtec only came with DOHC motors. my brother has a 2006 si, and it's obvious when his vtec kicks in.

btw, i drive a 5 speed. maybe i'm not gunning it long enough on 1st or 2nd gear...

Re: vtec: noob questions part 1

The only part of the vtec you will see is the solenoid. it is at the back corner of the head, kind of in the area behind the distributor. Look for the plug in for the dizzy...there is a second plug in next to it...follow that to the solenoid. The VTEC doesn't kick in until 5500 rpm, so unless you are really flogging it, you may not notice. My car is an auto, so I really have to push it to get to 5500 rpm, but I haven't really noticed anything.
