Yes all D-series engines (apart form D15 that has converter mouted on the exhaust manifold) have very similar converters so it should work. Just watch out to get one that's in better shape than yours. Oh and don't go to testing with an "cold car". Try driving for some 10 miles or so before doing the test. On motorway if possible. The hotter the converter the better it'll work.

Wrong. Some D16s have cats in the header some don't. The 98 EX that the OP mentioned has the D16Y8 motor that does NOT have the cat in the header. That cat is located underneath the chassis after the downpipe. It's possible to use it on the HX but you'd have to get a different d-series header without the cat in it and extend the wires for the secondary O2 sensor since that sensor will now be located further downstream in the exhaust.

It's best to look for a header for your engine or possibly one from a D16Y7 (96-00 DX).

HX uses special cats, two i think. one for normal operation and another for reducing Nox emissions. depends which one it is i guess.
