Question about manual transmission compatibility

Hey guys. Just a quick question. I have a '97 CX Hatch I use as my DD. The car has some tranny issues and is in need of a new one. I know the gear ratios are different between the different models, but other than that.. is there anything else different between the CX/EX/Si or whatever model transmissions that I should be aware of? Im just trying to find the lowest milage trans in the best shape locally, dont really care about gear ratios. Just want to pull this tranny out and swap another in with no hassles. Thanks guys

Re: Question about manual transmission compatibility

You can use any 96-00 tranny. The EX tranny will have lower ratios for better response.

Correction, the ratios are the same but the final drive is different. But yes, old school rule of thumb is: D series to D series and B series to B series.

You can swap out the final drive if it bothers you (I wouldn't as there is no reason to do so except maybe 5-8% better mileage).

Correction to your correction... The gearing is in fact different.

http://www.geocities.com/bing_bong916/trannyspecs1.html

For example 2nd and 3rd gears are different in addition to the FD as follows:

96-00 DX 96-00 EX
1 3.250 3.250
2 1.782 1.909
3 1.172 1.250

4 0.909 0.909
5 0.702 0.702
FD 3.722 4.250

Re: Question about manual transmission compatibility

Just double checked the Helms factory manual and you are correct. The cars that came with the D16Y5/D16Y7 have the same ratios, the D16Y8 does have what you listed.

Thanks for the correction!
