Project D17 Boost finally underway lol
Project D17 Boost finally underway lol
Im starting this post cause i would like to post the WHOLE process of turbocharging a D17 (including purchasing the parts, since im not getting a kit) All prices are in Canadian Dollars. Don't have money saved up, so going paycheck by paycheck, about 2500 a month, so be patient...
HERE WE GO:::
Wednsday Oct. 4. 06: Just picked up EXEDY Stage 1 Racing Clutch ($330). Stage 1 can handle up to 69% tourque increase so should be fine. Installing clutch first, to wear it in before the turbo install...
Friday Oct. 6. 06 Put down a deposit for EXEDY Ultralight Flywheel ($300), HKS SSQV BOV ($300), HKS Cast Iron Manifold ($250) -> all will be here Monday Oct. 16. 06 .... and made final decision on what turbo to go with, well: Garrett T3 Super 60 Internal Wastegate ($850)
Check back for more updates.

DIY style you'll be nickel and dimed to death. Come up with a parts list, add $2000 it for odds and ends. I'm not kidding. Silicone couplers, Tbolt clamps, stainless tubing and stainless braded line are all insanely expensive.
Pick the parts and for the love of god stick to it. Don't get half way then decide you wanted a bigger turbo, especially if the turbo foot changes, it ****s everything up.
Plan, plan, plan. Then buy parts. In all honesty, get money, buy parts in piles of things that go together (e.g, turbo and manifold, intercooler and pipes, etc....). I hope you can weld, or else add about another $1000 to the total.
Easy way to save money is to spend your money on the things that matter. Quality can be bought for cheap. Bling doesn't always work. Blow money on the turbo itself, on the fab work and the tuning. You don't *need* a $300 BOV, a $600 intercooler or Samco vaccum hose.
The manifold is the real place you gotta be careful, the HKS one is the only "cheap" one I'd trust, although you only got 4 or so options really on manifolds for this thing, the HKS and TSI are both T25 footed, Dezod's and SF's are T3 footed.
Pick from HKS or Dezod, or make your own I guess.
Last and probably most important: EBAY is not a turbo store. Anything related to boost besides silicone couplers is a no no. Anything from OBX, SS Autochrome or anything else that is "XYZ-style" is garbage.

Very true Boiler... I was planning my turbo build for like 2 months before I started.
Make sure you know where your getting ALL of your parts before you start buying them. I suggest you write down all the parts you need on paper before you start buying.
Good luck with your build

Yes, he sells the pipes and IC separately, but you'll still have to do some modifying.
Save all the trouble, buy the whole kit, its far less than the sum of its parts
yeah i have my dezod v3 kit on the way, i have a thred with most the stuff I got in the mail so far.. I should have it all up and runnin in 2-3weeks max, just w8in on the injectors and HKS manual boost controller.

Never get a super 60 on there, the compressor housing would be in the radiator.
Biggest thing I think you can get on the HKS is a 28R. Maybe get a 28RS on there, but the compressor housing is directly in line with the rad. support.
