Good amp to buy?
Good amp to buy?
I am looking at putting an amp in my 02 Civic. I got a Pioneer 6800 HU coming and am going to put in some decent speaker in the doors. What is a good amp to buy for this?? I've been outta the loop to long. My plan would be 4 channel and run door speakers on one channel and bridge the other channnels for a 10" sub at some point. Just wondering what good amp for this would be. Also anyone have a suggestion on front speakers?? I am leaning toward Boston Acoustic or Infinity. thanks.

run 4 speakers on 1 channel? your pioneer is probably putting out cleaner power than that without the amp. youd lose your ability to fade and balance your speakers too. just get a 4 channel if you feel you need it, and get a mono amp when you get your sub. Id look at JL or alpine amps...pricey, but great amps for the money

very bad. get a 4 channel amp for all four speakers (or a 2 channel for the fronts if youre cheap), and a separate amp for the sub. ive had great results with my alpine mrp-f240 its been pounding strong for 4 yrs and through 2 accidents. and it was only $200 its prolly even cheaper now.

depends on the sub youre gonna get, what were you thinking of getting? how many ohms would you run it at? single or dual voice coils? whats the RMS?
So far no one's offering any real reasons for not using a four channel amp for the front speakers and subs.
The only reason I can see for getting a four channel amp plus a mono sub amp would be if you plan to play your front and rear speakers at the same volume level, rather than playing the rears at a barely-audible level to provide a little rear fill. That seems to be what most people do (if they even run rear speakers at all) , but if you do plan to run the rears at full volume, don't forget to budget some money for replacing those speakers too, since the stock ones are garbage.
Getting a two channel amp plus a mono sub amp makes a little more sense. If you'll need a ton of wattage for your sub(s), it makes perfect sense, since most any four channel amp won't provide enough power. It also gives you more flexibility to upgrade one or the other if you decide you need more power at one end.
However, the downsides are you'll need more space, you'll have to deal with distribution blocks for power, two amps will cost you more than one, and you'll either need an external crossover or to make sure both amps have built-in crossovers (unless your HU provides that functionality). Oh, and I guess your likelihood of having an amp fail doubles, though that shouldn't be a problem if you buy good brands.
I think your decision should hinge on what sub you decide to get. If you go with something like an Image Dynamics IDQ10 (50-300W RMS), then an amp like the Alpine MRV-F345 (~$250, 75Wx2 + 300Wx1) would make sense. But, if you go with something like an IDMAX10 (200-1000W RMS), getting a two channel amp for the fronts and a mono sub amp that can put out something close to 1000W would make sense.

Josby, what some people have told me is to just run the rear speakers off the HU and then amp the front speakers. That would give you the rear fill from the back speakers. I don't need a ton of power, more looking for just solid sound quality. So the Alpine F240 won't do the trick for the front's and then a 10" sub. I don't need some super thumpin sub.... i'm getting to old for that. thanks!

Xtant 4004 4ch amp (50Wx2 + 200Wx1 into 4ohms)
a/d/s/ 346im 6.5" coaxial speakers in front
Image Dynamics IDQ10v2 (dual 2ohm coils in series for 4ohm load) in a .65ft^3 sealed Q-Logic box (a little too big, sub should've been in less than .50ft^3)
I'm not an expert and it's all subjective, but 200W into that sub produced sound quality I was very happy with and enough bass to shake the mirrors and make a friend of mine say "damn, I can't believe that's only one sub!" So, I think you could definitely be happy with 200W for your sub, unless you were to get one where 500W is the minimum recommended power or something. It's my belief that in that case underpowering the sub wouldn't just limit the max volume but would actually limit the sound quality, though I may be wrong about that.
IMO, as long as you pick a manufacturer that's known for making decent subs, get something above their bottom-line model, pick a model that's recommended for sealed boxes, use a sealed box that matches the manufacturer's volume recommendation, and power it with a good amp with at least 50% of the max RMS power handling for the sub, you'll probably be happy with the volume and sound quality.
Hey, thanks alot for that information. LIke I said it has been a long time since i've done this but am getting excited about it. Before this car I had an Envoy eith a Bose sound system from the factory so I didn't need to do anything. That was a sweet ride and sound too. Thanks again for all your help.
What do you like for subs ??

When the last Soundstream sub I had failed three years ago, I bought the Image Dynamics IDQ10 and was quite happy with it. It sounded way better than the Soundstream Reference 10. If I was smart, I'd save money and just move it into my Civic when I install my stuff soon...but, I bought a new amp (wanted a smaller one to fit under the seat)...then ordered new fronts because a surround on my old ones has gotten torn...then ordered a new sub box (the custom Q-Logic one made for our Civics)...so I might as well get a new sub too and hope it sounds even better. I think I'm going to get a JL Audio 10W3V3. I've never heard one, but I've heard so many good things consistently through the years about JL subs that I'm going to try one...plus it's a good match for the dimensions of that QL enclosure.
