Goodbye IVA-D900 Hello IVA-D310 + processor
I've had the Alpine IVA-D900 since it was still over 2K in the stores. I've loved the screen and all of it's features.
Unfortunately, my car was broken into 2 months ago and the people who tried to steal it didn't succeed and now it has a few intermitent issues. Either way, insurance is paying for a new unit. However, here's the catch: The D900 is no longer made. I was told that the best they could do was a D310 with a processor, which really doesn't mean anything to me since I run a PPI DCX-730 (similar to the Audiocontrol DQX). So after all of this time of me priding myself on a screen with over a million pixels, it looks like I have no choice but to go to the D310. My dash has been glassed so I have to stick with a single DIN. This sucks.
FAREWELL D900!

I have no need for a carputer. You can virtually build anything you want nowdays with Alpine. Bluetooth, USB port, navigation, Ipod. Besides, I have enough **** hidden in my car as it is.

so you threw out the d900 and got the d310 from insurance?
I just won a d900 on ebay yesterday, hoping it gets here within a week or so

I HAD a D900 and insurance couldn't get the 900 series since Alpine discontinued them. They WANTED to give me a D310 and the media Xpander. That was BS to me. The D900 was a FAR superior screen AND I already had a processor (The D900 always had DEFEAT on).
So I said "F" that and cashed out to the tune of $1357 after my deductible. Bought a D901 on ebay, drove all the way to Cali to get it, get home, bench test it, and it has two lines of pixel that are screwed up. Ughh! Sent email to the lady and no response yet. Bought it from her tattooed son apparently. Auction said "only 3 months old". It looks great but I know they knew it had this issue. So yesterday I dropped it off for repair. Never knew it but the D901 has a few different background screens from the D900. Nice change of pace for me.

Lets put it this way: When they offered me a new unit with touchscreen vs. my D900 with 400% more pixels, I cashed out to find another D900. I just figured I always wanted the D901 because the blue fit the dash better, so I found one. Too bad I'm paying for it now. Ultimately, using a DSP will make the Media Xpander useless. I ran the D900 on DEFEAT for years, but any way you look at, the isn't a single screen on the market NOW that can compare in quality. My only gripes are that Alpine hasn't figured a way past the 255 file limitation on MP3's and that the menu on the D900/901 is slower than most other units out there. In addition, Alpine dropped to 2V preouts on ALL units now. I suppose you give and take regardless of which unit you choose.

Menu speed is hardly something I would dwell on. After the initial setup, I doubt I would rarely be in there.
Are you saying there is a 255 TOTAL file limit on mp3 cd's, or 255 file limit per folder?

Not the menu you're thinking of. Let me rephrase it: Navigating through the unit for any reason is slow. Changing sources (CD to Radio, etc).
If my memory serves me correctly it's 255 PER folder. I think it has the same issue with the Ipod adapter and, thus, Apline recommends you build you playlists accordingly.

I have never played with a D310 for the purpose of comparing speeds. After being in many other cars with Eclipse, Kenwood, etc indash DVD setups, I've just thought to myself "why the crap is mine so slow?"
