2001 civic needs 50k service
Greetings,
I'm concerned about the 50k service, mostly about what it's going to cost. If you don't mind . . .
1. In the NYC metro area, what can I expect to pay for the service at a Honda dealership?
2. Are there any pitfalls or treachery I need to be aware of (unnecessary work, common con jobs, etc.)?
3. Is there a way to simply learn what service tasks are routinely peformed at 50K and then have the work done somewhere OTHER than a Honda dealership? Is this advisable, and would it help me to save money?
TIA,
Philip

Hey Phillip,
In the back of your manual is the suggested service intervals list.(If I had mine on me I'd tell ya what ya needed.)
If I were you I would call the dealer and ask their price and then call a few other places and get some other quotes.

I just recently did my service at 50K. I have an 03 manual. Took my car to a local shop. All they did was rotate my tires and did an oil change. I told them to check my brakes and they said everything was good and no other service was necessary. I also asked if they could change the tranny fluid but they said you don't need to for a manual. I will probably take my car to Honda for the 60K service though so they can change the cabin filter and stuff like that. Hope this helps your decision.

you can do it yourself. rotate tires. check fluids. change oil if needed. check belts see if any are cracked. if you have an auto change tranny fluids. bam done. honda is prolly like 300+ in this area (im from longisland)
Dude,
Call around and check the prices. It's not that hard. Oh and the dealership would tell you what the 50k maint is.
I'm feeling nice today so I'm including what it is:
50,000 mi/80,000 km Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2001 Honda Civic:
Rotate tires (follow pattern on page 175 of your owner's manual)
Check oil and coolant at each fuel stop
Check tire inflation and condition once a month

Microwave, Ronald, Cenz, Kyle -- thanks for your pointers. It's simpler than I thought. I was concerned that I was looking at hundreds of $$. Since the previous owner did not have the 40K service done, I'll include a few items from the 40K list and have the work done by a local mechanic.
Cheers!
