radar detector hard wire question
radar detector hard wire question
Hello, I have a cobra radar detector and I'm trying to either find a hard wire kit online or was wondering if it's possible to do without the kit. If I can do it without the kit what stuff do I need? I'm thinking just get a straight cord and then wire it right into the fuse box but I feel like it can't be that easy if they sell hard wire kits online for other radar detectors and I've seen one for the cobra but it comes with the actual radar detector
Crack kills... But then again... So do I...

Shouldn't be too difficult. Although this is strictly an assumption, I'd just cut the cig. plug mount an inline fuse with the correct fuse size and splice that into the pos. then from there ground it to the chassis. This is what I did with quite a few of my electronics including a power inverter and nothing has blown up yet.
might help.. maybe not.. seems like some info in this thread

you can also get this.. basically you are adding another accessory outlet and you put it behind the dash, nice and out of the way.. you dont have to use the square part..

NOOOOOOOOO don't cut in to cig lighter because when it comes time to undone it, and reattach the plug for the cig lighter its going to be hard...
Just take the power wire and ground from your device and run it to your radio hardness.

I have my passport 8500 Radar Dectector hard wired into my fuse box on my '03..
Go somewhere like Ace Hardware and in the electrical section you should be able to find some connectors that are designed to slip over one end of a blade fuse.
The problem that you will notice is that these connectors fit the full size blade fuses and not the smaller ones that we have in our cars. To remedy this I simply took it to a grinding wheel and cut it down until it fit...
Keep in mind that most all car accessories that plug into a cig lighter (no matter what the plug on the device looks like), only has two wires that matter, the power (hot) wire and the ground.
My radar detector's power wire is on the pos (+) side of a 20amp fuse
(i used an accessory with a 15amp fuse and replaced it with a 20amp to handle the extra draw) under the dash and the ground is connected to the body behind the driver side kick panel.
