Does anyone else out there "prime" their oil filter when doing oil changes? I started this awhile back where before I put my new oil filter back on I pour 1/2 quart of oil in so when the engine is started its less time my engine is running without oil. I know its just seconds but they say most of your wear comes at startup. Just thought i would throw this out there?

I tried it once and 90% of the oil probably spilled back out while attempting to put it back on. I've heard of the method of letting the filter sit overnight filled with oil before a change, but I can never plan out when I'm going to do it.

Not sure about this. I do it because it's one of those things that can't hurt IMO, but it can help. It's kind of a pain to do it on 7thgens because the filter is not in a convenient place, look under an 8thgen sometime and you'll be envious, the filter is right behind the bumper, tucked up in obviously, and it goes on straight up and down. You can practically fill the entire filter up and put it on full.

i know it sucks to do cause of the horizontal oil filter just thought i would see if i was the only one doing this. A little degreaser fixes that problem of leaking.

unecessary. your car is not "running without oil" for the first 1-2 seconds it takes for the filter to fill up. when you drain your oil, your entire engine is still coated with oil, as it simply doesn't all just drain out.

then when you pour oil back in, it's getting to where it needs to be in order for you to start the car properly.

unecessary step, but if it floats your boat, i have beachfront property i can sell you in idaho.

The oil goes into the filter when you are putting new oil in If you dont believe me try putting 4 quarts back in with the filter off.

Also when you start your car (and when its running) not all the oil is being pumped throught the oil filter before it gets pumped everywhere. Only a % of it is forced through the filter at any give time... the rest is being pumped to where it is needed. Not like the Cars from 20 years ago with oil filters the size of soda bottles when all the oil was forced thought the filter before being sent to the engine parts. Back then they had bypass values incase the filter got clogged.
Today most cars are only pumping 1/3 of the oil that runs through the oil pump through the filter. Eventualy all the oil gets its pass through the filter.

yea...this isnt really required...typically its really required on diesel trucks b.c their filters are huge so u need to put couple quarts of oil in it before puttin it on. on our cars its not even required or even needed to be done. nd no oil doesnt go into the filter when u pour the oil in...it starts circulating into the filter when u start the car and let it run.

Most of the oil you put in will drain to the bottom of the oil pan, the filter is no where near the bottom.

You've obviously never done an oil change on your car. Or any other car for that matter. There is only ONE car that I have ever seen that WILL pour oil out when the filter is not on. On the older late 80's Gm 4-Tech engines, there was no drain plug. there was only a little cap on the bottom, which housed the internal pan filter. It was all one unit.
