Help/Advice on suspension on my '01 Sedan
I have searched, read, compared over and over about how i want to go about replacing my suspension. I know it's due from replacing since i have an '01 ES1 with original stock suspension w/63k+ miles, i've driven it in Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Switerland, Austria, and Poland) here in the states (from PA - Chicago and back and two round trips to Georgia) and always beat her down pretty good.
What i'm exactly looking for is the ability to drop it an inch for my daily driving and possibly lower for showing her off. And i still kinda need to raise it back to stock cause of bad roads. But i'm also looking for a comfy ride and good handled ride aswell.
At first i started thinking about getting Tokico HPs and coilovers... but i heard that i'll loose handling and comfort so i thought about getting HPs with Neuspeed Sport Springs... but with this i can't do height adjustments either.
So then i started looking at the more expensive full coilover systems. These offer the best of both worlds... but the cost is higher. Seeming by cost: shocks + springs or coilovers + camber kit = a full coilover system.
I shopped around and did way TOO MUCH math for one night.
But there are alot of vendors on here that have full coilover kits for alittle under $1,000 with free shipping. And if i bought shocks, springs/coilovers, and camber kit w/shipping included... it comes out to pretty much the same price everywhere. BTW: main places i looked at were Dezod, Robear, TrueHonda, and Nopi.
I would go with just sport springs... but my exhaust already rubs sometimes now as it is. So i figured a full coilover system... because it's supposed to be the best way to go... and some of the kits are priced great... that i should go with this avenue of aproach.
But then there's choosing the best one!
Well i noticed that the Megan Racing Coilover kit has gotten some good reviews recently and it comes with camber plates, which kills two birds with one stone, and it's cheaper than rather getting a different one and buying a camber kit. But i don't know much about these kits either... the Progress kit looks really good, Tein Basics seem alittle shady (only ones without dampening?), Omni's and B&G's kits look alright. And they all are alittle over $900 each w/free shipping.
I really would like to get one of Dezod's suspension kit setups... cause the last one is the best deal over all... (except for the added cost cause of the DX model) And i don't really need sway bars and stuff right now.
Some good advice, general help, or suggestions in what to choose would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Ok, from the majority of people i've talked to said go with the Megans or Tein SS... or Basics. I noticed that the Tein's don't come with camber plates but the Megans do... so i figure i'll just go with them.
A new shop i went to today afterwork told me to stay away from coilovers/fullcoil overs in general cause they ride like crap... which seems really odd cause i figured it was the opposite.
If someone has some info or advice to throw into this... it would be great. I'd rather not find out the hard way by dropping $900 on something... cause it's not like buying a crappy cai.

coilover systems will generally provide you with a stiff ride. But there are systems out there such as megans and the tein ss or the JIC that will allow you to adjust the dampening. You will be able to adjust the stiffness or softness of the rebound and compression dampening of the shock/strut.
But yea, wait for our resident auto-xer's, theyll hook you up, unless they close your thread and tell you to search.

I'll be using it for street in general... i think i already said that. But i wanna leave myself open alittle if i ever wanna do alittle more than drive the beast into the ground driving around the city. For the most part it's my daily driver... but over time i've been putting more and more work into her... cause it's enjoyable working on it. Currently working on Xproduction's Vtec head swap and some interior stuffs.

Yeah that's true.... we got acouple nice ones here on Ft. Gordon... but most people are total rice and over do it. I don't go up to North Augusta much cause i don't know the area... been here since October myself. And for the most part there are only about 5 shops to go to... and all kinda talk down on the other ones. Push comes to shove... i'm just gonna have Honda do my head swap... least if they mess it up... i'm sure they'll help me out for sure.

I haven't had any work done here. I'm going to school at MCG and I'm broke! I would like to check out the shop that advertises on TV with the black vette with lambo doors, but most of the "performance shops" I've seen install 26s, sat radio, and fart cans.

For the street, its hard to pick a bad setup.
"coilovers" are ushually assumed to be better by default, but they're really not. They are just more convieniant in that you dont have to think about what spring or what damper you need. some one just hands you both and says use these... where as with a spring + damper setup you get to do the thinking...but the upside to that is you will be better able to tune the car to precicly your needs.
So, if you just want something that works, buy a pre-built "coilover". if you want to tune the car to its best capibilities, a Spring + Damper may be the better choice.

Listen to Boiler & Zzyzx because these guys are good when it comes to suspension.

And right when I think I found a worthwhile one. The Megan Racing coilovers. They seem to meet my cost requirement, adjustable ride height, and comes with camber plates already. But I’m looking for positive feed back on ride quality. Then I read this… and TrueHonda I’m not bashing… this just made me wonder about not getting them and means I take your opinion very highly: “We will NOT sell Megan/D2/Ksport and all the other "hype" coilovers. We sell products that generate results, have good construction, and the companies actually want to invest time into perfecting them... not just making money.
Im sorry for hating on them, but it has been a long battle between us and these companies to show people that your getting the lowest grade product for a jumped up price. They work on the street ok, but hayame proved to us that a manufacturer gaurantee from these itty bitty companies means nothing.” (This came from another thread BTW)
I thank you for hating on them… and for me reading it… you might have just saved me from a bad suspension setup. So I’m gonna try and talk to Dezod about his stage II suspension kit for now.

you should look up TANABE coilovers, they're supposed to be really good. and dont get megan anything, i dont think their products are high quality. even the vendor himself said so if you go to the thread that says "the biggest group buy ever", he says he wont or doesnt sell megan or B&G. or something like that.

Ive done some research and I am planning on getting the tokico D-spec's strut spring combo. It will drop you about 1.4 inches. Everybody ive talked to has said they are awesome for the price. Plus unlike the HP's these are 16 way adjustable so you can set it for comfort and then stiffin the suckers up for the track. witha 1.4 inch drop these are borderline for having to purchase a camber kit, if you dont mind a little tire wear you can purchase thse for $669 shipped.
/\ What he said....if you are looking for a good setup for daily driving w/camber adjustment for front, just buy the Megan's. They are between 800-900 for the set and they will handle any turn the streets can throw at you, but still give you a "smooth" ride. Best bang for the buck IMO.

i've heard stuff from people on various forums that megan is a same company that pretty much makes the apexi coilovers ?? i'm in the same boat right now looking for coilovers, i have friends that have the tein basics and man they ride super smooth.
what about D2 coilovers they seem to be the same coilover pretty much as the megans

some pics to help
Ok guys i've done some more research and asked acouple people about suspension stuff... and i feel alot more educated, but i still have some general questions since i don't know crap about dropping and the outcome of dropping with different setups.
Reminder: i have a '01 sedan with 17s... wanting larger tires soon, looking for about 1 - 1-1/2 drop, and i'd like to keep my subs or at least one of them. I use my car for daily driving... well aggressive daily driving... and probably would talk it to a track if i could right now. And my biggest worry is rubbing the ground alot.
As of right now i am stuck between three options:
1 Tein SS... i have no idea what the whole upper pillow ball mount is worth, read some people say it's noisey and alittle harder... from a noob point of view i'm guessing these are just replacement mounts for the top where it connects to the car. What would you suggest?
2. HPs or Dspecs with Ground Control Coilovers... seen pics of this drop and alot of people have them. I assume that Dspecs would be better overall cause i could adjust the dampening. Or are the HPs enough? The GCs state that they aren't for Tokicos... so why are people using them?
3. HPs or Dspecs with Neuspeed springs... i'd rather not go with this cause i can't adjust the height and you can see why from the pics. But i don't know crap about suspension.... so i don't know if just plain springs are good enough. And i can't seem to find these Goldline springs anymore... i found them once... but lost the link.
Why don't people use the Skunk2 coilovers? I saw these ones on Nopi that are for Tokicos but they look like crap quality... made by some company named #1 Racing... Thanks for help in Advance

I have h&r springs and tokico hp's. Good ride firmer than stock but it handles nice and it takes the crappy roads here well. Either way you decide to go post some pics after it settles.

I'd use H&R if i had a coupe.... but everyones told me that'll it'll sag alot in the rear. I plan on taking my spare tire out... maybe to off set any sag because of the subs. But i really need advice on a sedan specific setup. I know every car is different in the way they take a drop... that's why i added pics now. I didn't pay crap for my exhaust and had it put on by a pro installer for free. Lifetime warrently and all can take it back to get it adjusted.... but i'd rather not jack it up more than needed.

They are still on the list goodtimes... but as much as everyone bashes on them, i'm looking around for a better setup from a company that has been doing suspensions for a long time. Since the would be pros here say it's better.... also i'm worried about how the Megans will hold up in the long run.
Another thing i'm worried about if one of them go bad... it's not just like replacing a shock like if it was all separate parts....
Do the Megans have rear camber plates or just front.
