need help with shock replacement
Okay, sorry for the n00b questions guys, but I've been tring to track down an anoying little squeek in my front suspension, and in doing so I snapped the top off of one my struts. I have KYB and AGX adjustable struts with GC coilovers. Anyway I snapped the top of the strut off and the liquid inside went spewing everywhere, big mess. But I want to know if there is an easy way to get this thing off and can I sned it back to get fixed or do I have to buy a new one? If I have to buy a new one, whats the cheapest place, the best I've found is $122 at Nopi, but I going to check out some site vendors right now.
Thanks for your help!!!

If the oil came out, you will have to buy a new one. I would call KYB and see how much a rebuild is if they even rebuild at all. Rebuild with shipping to an from might be just as expensive as buying a new one. You can't drive on that shock if there is no oil in it, so you are going to have to put stocks in the front for awhile.

If the **** came off they're gonna have to gut it and rebuild it... might as well buy a new one. Its more than a standard rebuild because they're going to replace everything rather than seals and stuff.

okay, well I got it out.
Anybody know where the cheapest place is to buy struts? I'm goning to call KYB Monday morning and ask them about it, maybe it's covered under some sort a warranty? KYB puts some sort of lifetime warranty behind their products, so we'll see, but for now I'm just shopping to see where I can find one in case they say no.

Actually the adjustment **** is okay, it just need a cheapo plastic cap over it, but the threading on the top is what snapped, I'm not sure if that's welded or what. But is kind of curious to me that the **** is fine and the fluid came out anyway...

I was going to take a picture this morning before I left for work, but I forgot... the part where the top bolt threads on is all that broke, it a hollow tube with threading on it, and the adjutment **** comes up through there. The little plastic cap to the **** came off and threading snapped. The actualy **** for changing the setting is still in place, that's why I don't under stand why the fluid came out, I think (or hope) it was blown before I broke it. I was getting a serious squek over every bump, I thought it was a budhing or something not tightened properly, but maybe it was the strut. I'll take a pic tonight at home and post it for all to see.
jrfish007,
i am so glad to see this topic, but sad about your shock. just to let you know, i have had KYB shocks in 3 of my cars for a long time, and they are very nice about replacing shocks that are old and dont perform well any longer, because of this i am hoping they will also replace your shock for free. I hope you have your receipt, take it back or just call the place where you purchased and make sure they have that shock in stock before you drive there to exchange it.
Here is why i am glad to see this post, for i too have the KYB AGX shocks in my 2001 sedan. About one week ago my front suspension developed this horrible squeak, like an old bed taking a beating, ya know? I mean horrible. So I got under the car and sprayed down the sway bar with silicone spray, but the squeak is still there! ITs unbearable. I get no squeak when going over a speed bump with only my right front tire, and the horrible wrenching squeak when i go over a speed bump with both front tires. The speed doesnt matter, 5-10 mph will elicit the noise.
So, Let me know if you find out what was making that squeak on your setup.
Thanks.

Yeah it's a long shot for the replacement, but I'm going directly to AGX, since I don't have a picture I can't do it today. But I've found that generally if you go direct to the manufacture, you have a decent chance. I did the same thing with an AEM V2 intake I bought off ebay. AEM never even asked where I bought it or anything, they just wanted pictures of the intake sent to them via email, they really didn't care where I bought the thing, never even asked how old the intake was. I am hoping AGX is the same. If you go to a shop, in the end AGX is still replacing it, so why not just go directly to AGX, generally less hassle from what I've seen.
If not, I'll probably just go Summit Racing and buy one, I work about 5 minutes from their main outlet, no shipping and the price match and have just about everything in stock.

Oh yeah, they've got about everything you need for Honda from complete blocks to floor mats. They only carry performance type stuff though, do go there looking common stuff like jackstands or something. But they got almost everything, and since it's their main wharehouse, if they have it, you get right then. And they are open 7 days a week, so any and every day you can run up and get parts, it's nice being so close to a huge shop like that. They don't carry the real high end stuff like Spoon and Mugen, but I can't afford that stuff so it doesn't matter to me.

Anyway, you can see the thread is what broke. It's just a hollow tube and the adjuestment **** is what is sticking out through the center, and other than haveing the little plastic thingy on the top popped off, it's fine.

So I bought a new one today
hopefully get it put in on Friday, Summit had by far the best price, 99.95, which came to $106.20 after taxes, cheapest I found onlien was 122 something.
Just FYI, double wish bone cars are FAR simpler than the normal McPherson Strut system. You can drop the wish bone down with one bolt and is take the tension off of everything, very nice and easy.
Thanks for everyones help!!!
Now if I could just get GC to send me a new perch...

So I replaced everything and tightened down to spec, and the intial squeek that caused this problem is gone. So either it was a squeeky bolt (doubt that) or the strut was bad to start. So I'm guessing the remaining struts are also on there way out.
The front of the car is lowered down about 2 inches and the rear only about a 0.5 inches, so do you guys think the front ones will ware out faster than the rear because the front is lower?

hey i readi all the posts in this thread and i was wondering, is KYB AGX good? cuz i'm looking to get shocks pretty soon cuz i've been on H&R's and stock shocks for like 6 months, and it's getting pretty bumpy now, i dont mind too much but my mom minds when she's in my car, and i really do prefer a smooth ride over a bumpy one anyways but yea, how long have you had your shocks on before you had this problem Jrfish007, and do they make it for 04-05 civics?? cuz i know they do for 01-03, but i think someone said something about there being a bolt size difference or something? i'm not sure, i'm noob at this stuff, something being 14mm on the 01-03 and 16mm on the 04-05 =| i have no clue what they were talking about but yea, if someone could enlighten me about this stuff, and is the Adjustment **** not very secure or something? did you break your shocks while trying to adjust the shock?

Yeah, they are good shocks, and you pay for them too. That one shock was $106. I bought the car with the shcoks on them already. I specifically asked the guy when he put them on and he said about a year ago, but now that I have torn them appart, it looks longer. He also said the car sat for 3 months, I'm not sure if this bad for shocks or not. I think you can get them but you have to redrill a whole. There shoud be a DIY on or something on this.
