Anybody Riding a Bike?
Anybody Riding a Bike?
I just picked up my Class 6 motorcycle license last week, I'll be putting off actually getting a bike until next spring when finances and weather allow as the present season is pretty much over (looking at either a used CBR600 or a current Suzuki SV650s). Just wondering if anyone locally can give me the heads up on where might be a good place to get ahold of things like gear, a used and/or new bike and anything else that might be good to know. Thanks a lot.
Raises Hand... ooo me me lets go ride sometimes when ya get the bike..
Gear. Check out Riverside yamaha/suzuki/honda in st.Albert. Alberta Cycle on yellowhead and 97st or Argyll motorsports on argyll and like 91st. Get the best gear that you can afford at the moment then upgrade later when you have money.
check the autotrader for used bikes.. dealership are having sales on their old inventory to make room for new models for next year.
Check http://edmontonsportriderz.com for some info. Kinda like 7thgencivic but for bikers in edmonton. They have a for sales section of used bikes and others.. well have a good one.. see ya on the road sometimes.

Thanks for the heads up, I was looking through autotrader.ca and found some good looking used CBRs ('99s all around 5.9-$6.8k).
Gear-wise I've already made some headways, mostly at Scona Cycle. In fact, I was really impressed, they were -really- helpful, they gave me a 15% student discount, I bought a matte black Icon helmet off of them for $350 or so, which was undiscounted, being current season. But afterwards, they gave me a pair of Oxtar boots for around $100 and a pair of 1st Gear riding gloves for $30. In total I got some very decent gear for about $450 or so out the door.

Nice nice.. ya you have to search around.. sometimes there are deals.. unless ya know someone that works at the dealership. Getting a used bike is probably the best way to go unless you gots mad cash and can get a new one.. I learnt on the old dirt bike then got a used one then got my new one.. it's less painful when you drop the used one.. sucks when ya drop a brand new bike.. the pain. Well good luck getting your first bike.
Yeah, I was thinking of getting a roll cage (well, 'roll cage') installed so that even if I drop it there won't be any fairing damage. Have you got any idea of someone who does that kind of work and what it would run me up?
A cage eh.. ya they do the trick. Check out Freeride Performance (on Eastside of 178St and like 108 AVe or so.) for all your stunting needs and other stuff. Not sure about the pricing ..depends on the model and brand that you go with. Probably around $300+ looking at the 905 armor. They are $250 USD
I've not many designs insofar as stunting is concerned, as I just got my class 6 last week, but dropping a CBR600 on it's side would damage fairings, engine, and whatever else hit the ground probably more than $300 worth, so I figure its a safe bet. Can you recommend anything else to preserve the bike itself should I have to lay it down?
Also, I was thinking of investing in some armor for the coming season 8mo. from now, particularily this: http://www.highvelocitygear.com/productpages/mpba.html which I've found for $129USD. I've tried researching online, but resources on armor seem small, just wondering if you had an info. as far as thats concerned.

WEll drilling is better than the brackets.. apparently they might break and do more damage than they are made.. Cages are the best protection you have if you laid her down. Got sliders on mine, drilled one hole and it's all good. if done right it looks like it's meant to be there. Ya hmm well drop by freeride.. they have a lot of stuff there.. armors, sliders, gears etc. they would be able to help you out with all the questions you may have.
Thanks for the heads up and all the info.
I've been researching gear and bikes for about the last 2 weeks straight, so I've gotten at least moderately informed so far, I can't wait until the spring when I can actually go and buy a bike.

Well good luck.. best time to buy is probably when the season is over.. ya save more.. but don't really get to ride it though.. it's a win lose situation.. see ya around one time.. lata
Do you know if a lot of bike shops still sell motorcycle apparel through the winter (ie: jackets, pants, etc.). Because I know a lot of bike places also sell ATVs and snowmobiles, do they switch their stock over to that come winter or do they just have all the motorcycle gear at cut rate until the new stuff shows up in the spring?
Well, I've already gotten myself a helmet (an Icon mainframe), I would shop online (already ordered some CE Level 2 armor..) but I'm just not sure size-wise and apperance wise how things will pan out, for bigger ticket items like jackets I don't want to leave that to a game of FedEx ping-pong trying to figure out the correct size with some company in the US while paying a 25% restocking fee each time.
Yup.. the bike shop still sell riding gear even through winter. It's always in stock. and they can order you the right fitting jacket if they don't have it in. I go online to get some stuff.. but lots of things I would rather go to the dealership. won't cost ya if it was the wrong size.. they'd just get you the correct one.
misslyn: What bike ya riding? getting cold now.. need some fall/winter gear for the late night/ early morning ride..

lol fair weather riding only! i used to ride my brother's r6, but then he sold it for an r1, so that ruined my plans for this summer. so i guess that would mean im looking for a new one right now!
Hmm interesting.. ya lots of bikes for sale right now. Well fair weather.. not much left of fair weather. this summer sucked ***.. too many rain days.. boo urns. Well good luck with the bike shopping.. maybe we all should go for a ride next season. When it's nicer out.. which reminds me.. time for a little cruise at night time.
Is there usually a lot more bikes that go up for sale at the end of the season or the beginning. I'm going to try to see if I can score a CBR600, pref. 97-01, in that range by April.
Everyone is trying to get rid of there bikes at the end of the season.. pretty much now. and the prices are lower than what they will be in the spring time. Best time to buy is at the end of the season.. IMO. But you can still score a sweet ride next season... you gots to look around.
CBR600RR or the F4i? Honda was my second choice.. but Yamaha R6 is too sexy to pass up.

Probably an F4i, just because they're a wee bit cheaper and less likely to have seen abuse (people tend to think that the number of "R"s on their bike/car gives them more incentive to do wheelies/burnouts/etc etc.). By May/April I'll be scouring for a bike, hopefully I can snag one of the ones that didn't sell this fall.
I'd like to go for a 01+ model if I could as that when I heard they added the fuel injection to it. It would mean not having to deal w. constant rejetting and being able to get fun things like Power Commanders in a year or two once I'm more comfy.
The R6 is a hot looking bike
