engine build question

whats up everyone

as some of you know, i have my turbo sitting on my pool table just staring at me, but due to school and hte lack of time before i cant install it this year

so....ive decided ot build up the d17 for boost next year

now, i've spent the last year learning about boost inside and out, and have no idea about building an engine, but from what research ive done, here is what im thinking

crowere stage 3 cam
valve springs + retainers
rods
head gasket + head studs

what bolts should i use on my rods to ensure they dont strech under boost?

..now do i need to upgrade my pisons? or should i just swap in some lx ones?

all info appreciated

HyaBoosta will become famous soon enough
thats alot of money to spend not to spend the extra on pistons while you have the block open. last thing you want to do is shatter or crack a piston under all that pressure. def. get a set of pistons

Hey whats up man, where u located? Im in the same exact boat as you are. Goin to UCR next quarter and right now i live in So. Cal. Anyways, Ive got the TSI extreme kit with two xtra fuel injectors, interface block and mbc. I bought it used for 1650 off of ebay, with approximately 3000 miles on it. My plan was to install it right away but its been sittin in my garage for 3 weeks now. Long story short, I have more important things to do. Right now Im thinkin like you. Probably going to get arp head studs and I just bought rsx s injectors with 1000 miles on them off of ebay for 70 bucks. EBAY IS MY HAVEN. So that means emanage or vafc II. I read a thread in the turbo faq that says vafc II is the only true device to properly tune a d17. But get back to me, youre not alone on this one, and this turbo "stuff" is the only word I can describe it as, is a black hole with no end, in my mind at least.

You really don't have to build your head for boost. Our motors do not rev that high to worry about valves, springs and retainers. If you are going to replace the rods, then spend the money to replace the pistons, rings, oil pump, bearings and sleeve the block.

That is actually untrue.......the vafc/safc is a good device, but should be avoided. The best devices to control fuel are emanage and AEM ems.

Upgraded valves and springs, or at least the springs are absolutely neccesary if you are puting in a stage 3 cam. Plus the upgraded valves may handle higher exhaust temps depending on which ones you buy. I would get the pistons and rings as well as the rods, the rods usually come with arp 2000 rod bolts already installed. do the bottom end first and then if theres room in the budget do the head.

stage 3 cam is overkill for a street car. it will be hell to maintain idol. but go with new pistons/rings along with the rest of the internals. and i reccommend arp headstuds. go internals before head work because once you do that you will probably want the AEM EMS if you plan on doing any of it, it works alot better than the emanage. that is what im saveing up for now.

I have had the aem pretty much since it has been released. I think my serial number was like number 6 or 8 hehe. You will not be able to pass the obd plug in test for emissions but if you are boosting a ulev car theres not much chance of passing anyway, hehe. Yea it is pretty much the best thing ever invented for a fuel injected vehicle. spend the extra money on the ems, you are garanteed great drivability, reliabillity, and more HP, hands down as long as you find a factory certified tuner.
