if you dont tell them then they wont find out. there isnt a database for anything like that. the only thing would be if you have a claim on one vehicle, both policies may be held liable.

i think they will find out. they run your driving record and will see that you have another car registered to you.
you should shop around, usually when you have two cars insured by the same company, you will get better rates.

If you have one car insured with a company, you can insure the other as a part time car and usually get a better rate combined. If you insure it with 2 companies, you'll get a rate like you're the full time driver on both. You need to shop around and get companies to quote you on a combined policy. Just because the people you're with gave you a rediculous quote, doesn't mean everyone will. Shop around.

The motor vehicle report used by insurance companies is only in relation to driving history, it has absolutly nothing to do with your vehicles.

Yeah you will get a better rate by going through the same company for both cars because of a multicar discount that is sometimes up to 40%. Its actually the biggest discount you can get. However, its not unusual for a company to be especially high on one car and not on the other, but keep in mind the package deal. It doesnt matter what you pay individually, just what you pay overall. Shopping around is the only way youll ever save any money.

The insurance company is going to get your driving records for the last 3 to 5 years, and I'm sure that using your DL, it will show that you have been driving at least 2 cars that are registered in your name. And any tickets you have gotten for moving violations (or anything that will effect insurance rates), they will also find out if you have made any claims due to accidents (which shows up via the DMV if I'm not mistaken). And there will of course be the questions from the new insurance about have you made claims in the past X number of years, tickets in the last X number of years, accidents, etc. And yes they will find out later if you lie about tickets and accidents and it will normally be after you make a claim with them. "Oh so sorry you lied, but thanks for the money anyway, we won't cover you!". At which point they will either jack up your rated or drop you.

My question is what would your rates be with two different companies, compared to a two car discount with one company?

Yes depending on the state they do get your MVR for the past 3-5yrs. However it only pertains to driver record, insurance companies dont have the ability to see if you have other vehicle registered in your name. The claim report is not from the DMV it is actually called a C.L.U.E report that comes from a huge database of claims accessible to all participating insurance companies. The only time an accident would show up on MVR is in some states if a police officer filed a report, not the case in all states. All reports that are run, credit, MVR, and C.L.U.E, are interactive reports, meaning they come back immediatly. In Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Montana they take 5 business days. It is possible to get a better rate by having 1 car here and 1 there, because a certain company may have a bad loss history with a particular vehicle. However this is usually not the case. Compare the total of what you would pay having them together vs having them apart and see what has the best out of pocket expense.
