On my way home from school at about noon today, I was driving the civic with its bald tires, explaining to my buddy Kevin that I'm for sure getting tires first thing tomorrow morning. Anyways, we're listening to music, riding in the carpool lane, then THUMP!
The steering wheel starts doing this strange wiggly dance, turning sharply to the left, then the right, then back left again. There was a LOT of road noise, too... I knew what happened. Flat tire [or so I thought].
So, I pull over to the left side, since I was unable to do anything past the 80 mph that it would take to get all the way across the other 5 lanes. I call AAA. Mind you, I'm in Orange County-- commonplace for lifted trucks and SUV's driven by angry soccer moms and little girls that can't drive. Since the left shoulder wasn't very wide [thank God I had a civic], cars were getting really close to me. Kevin and I sat timidly with our seatbelts on, since I couldn't get out thanks to the wall, and he couldn't either because of the cars.
Finally, I get the courage to barely squeeze out of my car [I'm skinny] and get to my trunk, where I had these electronic flare thingies. I braved the jungle of the freeway to place the flare a ways down before my car, so other motorists would be alerted.
The towtruck finally came [I can't replace the wheel with a spare without standing in the actual carpool lane], but he was just sitting there in front me on his radio. Moments later, sirens blared as two CHP patrol cars cut traffic and weaved like madmen across the lanes. The sight reminded me of dancing waters at the Mirage in Las Vegas. Anyways, they eventually parked sideways on the freeway and stopped traffic competely. All hail the Civic
.
One of the patrol units drove up to me and told me that I can pull over to the right shoulder, which I did and quickly replaced the old wheel with the spare. Upon inspection, I discovered that the original tire had burst open from the heat and lack of tread. The inside of my Si rim was a little scuffed in a few areas, but nothing on the outside
. As I put the wheel back in the trunk, my arm and finger got a quick taste of the structural wires in the ripped tire. Thank God we're okay.
Anyways, I was asking Kevin's twin brother, Danny, for a ride online today. Of course, he knew the story, but we had a convo that I thought I'd share [note the 2 Fast 2 Furious references
]. His s/n is Starskan while mine is AndysMonday...
