How long to change Mobil 1 oil/filter?
Hey guys,
This is not one of those questions on whats the best oil/filter that has been asked to death.
But back in October 2004 I put in Mobil 1 oil w/ a Mobil 1 filter. It has been close to 5 months since I've put in the Mobil 1 oil, and I have put 3,400 miles on the 02 Civic Ex since October.
I haven't hit the 30,000 mark, checked the oil fluid, it looks brand new....just like it did on the first day, and the synthetic oil is holding up pretty good.
The car runs great. So when should I go for another oil change? Some say they drive the car until 6,000miles hit on it, but I don't want to do that.
But with synthetic oil, it should last a good while. The only thing is the filter should be changed, but its Mobil 1 so it'll outlast other filters. Well if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

On a side note, I'd like to put in that I had Marvel Mystery Oil to help prevent sludge, and even prolong the life of the oil & car.
Also, awhile back I added just a bit of Sea Foam to clean out any condensation & varnish in the oil crankcase.

Whoa! Creepy!
I too have a 02 ex and I changed my oil and filter to Mobil1 last October. I have about 4k on it since, and I was planning on changing it next month.
The general feelings around here is ~5k on synthetics. I will have about 4.3k when I change it in a couple of weeks.
One thing though: I've heard you shouldn't leave SeaFoam in your crankcase for more than a few hundred miles. You should change your oil, since the deposits it is supposed to remove stay dissolved in your oil, upsetting its viscosity.

The Sea Foam removes oxygen from your crankcase. It also protects the car from sludge buildup, and will clean the oil. But you see, the crankcase never had any or very much sludge as it has been properly maintained. I used to change the oil before 3kmiles, and now synthetic just gives an extra protection.
Plus, if Sea Foam did remove deposits, which it probably did, it'll just go to the trust worthy Mobil 1 oil filter.

I use Mobile one also, change it about every 3-4k. As for the oil "holding up pretty good" and looking clean is because your car has low miles and does not have much blow by yet. When it starts to get alot of miles on it the oil will start to look much darker sooner. As for the additives you are putting it I would not recommend that since the car is still realatively new. Adding attitives is not necessary at this point and a waist of money. If you continue to use Mobile1 and change it between 3-4k miles you should never have to use additives unless you have hundres of thousands of miles on it. If you change your oil on a regualr basis and dont over heat the car you should never have sludge biuld up with regular maint. I had a 1987 ford ranger I sold with over 338,000 miles on it, when I replaced the valve cover gasket at 280,000 there was absolutely NO sludge anywhere, I changed the oil every 3k. Also I heard that wal*mart will do a Mobile1 oil change for 31.00, almost not worth doing it yourself at that price!
Its a bad idea to put any of that additive crap in with your oil. If you are running a good oil, it is not necessary.
The only to oil additives that are actually proven to help by individual private testing are:
Lube Control: http://www.lubecontrol.com
Auto-Rx: http://www.auto-rx.com
I'd only use that off the shelf crap in a beater car I was trying to save.
If you have any additive in your oil now, change it. Then just use Mobil 1 with a good filter and change it every 6,000 miles.

Theres another type of oil that was developed. I forgot what's it called but you won't be able to find it anywhere unless you head up to San Bernadino, CA. Its way better than synthetic and as you drive, it also cleans out the deposits, and you change it every 7k.
