Knock clunk BANG 2001 Civic
Knock clunk BANG 2001 Civic
Question:
Front end makes noise as if it was hit with a hammer when you hit a bump. How do I tell if it’s the struts? I jacked it up and shook, pulled, and pushed every part but heard or felt nothing wrong.
With the car back on the ground I can push the front end down with little effort so it seems as the struts are shot. It’s my wives car so I’m assuming this has been going on for some time.
Thanks

its the struts alright...there was a recall long *** time ago about the 01 vics having a problem with the front struts blowing... I had one of mine replaced by the dealer aready, then got paranoid the others were gonna blow, so I went aftermarket. =/
Thank you everyone.
I just went to the store and when I hit a bump doing 40 it bounced like a baseball after the BIG BANG!!!
So can anyone tell me which ones are good and which ones to steer clear of? I took a quick look at the local auto places ad from around me in CT and the struts go from 150 to 350ea.
That sucks. I was thinking shock costs.
Is this a hard job? I have no problem working on cars/bikes just don’t have any special tools (accept the ones I had to buy for my HD
).
Looks like 3 nuts up top and 2 big ones on the lower part to drop it out.

Well, you can go for KYB GR2s... they're better than OEM replacements, probably the least expensive option
Tokico HPs are adjustable, they're gonna cost a little more though, and you'll probably be better off doing all 4.
Install isn't too hard. 2 bolts on the bottom, 3 on the top + the steering arm, swap the spring over and put it back together. There's a real good DIY on it in the DIY section, or if you search "Spring install" in this forum.

If you are going to replace them and it isn't really for performance or looks I would suggest the brand Tokico, and get the Blue strut/shocks set.
They are about $400 for all 4 and you could probibly get them cheaper on ebay.
They look like this:
