Buying a used car. seller willing to let me make monthly payments. What I need to do?

I'm trying to purchase this car from a seller. He said he will pay off the car and lease the car to me for 2 years and when the 2 year lease is up I can purchase the car from him with the agreed price. He wants to be guaranteed that I will make payments and purchase the car after 2 years. I think its a good idea because this way I won't have to get charged interest as if I were to get a car loan. What do I have to do to make it a legal agreement to where if i don't make payments he can get his car back? Do I have to have a written agreement notarized and recorded? Is there a form available for this or I have to make a hand written agreement? If someone knows how to go about this please help me out I need a ride to commute to and from work. Thanks.

never heard of anyone buying a car like that. but first think about your cover... what could happen? he can play u like a fool and have u make those monthly payments under his name and such. even if you guys have a contract or verbal agreement, it may be even illegal in the first place? cause the way it would work is you take the car and continue the payments. have the car transferred over to you to the point where your name is under it and it could be registered and all that.

i suggest calling the dmv or even visit their website. i know there california website is www.dmv.ca.gov
