Talking Raced a GTO

I was on my way home from working 13 hours straight when I came up next to a new GTO with temp tags and a couple of early 20s looking guys. I really did not think that he would want to race me but, the guy in the passenger seat just kept looking at me. Well we were in traffic so we could not race the light turned green and I followed traffic through it, but he stayed back and floored it up next to me. SO Ok maybe he did want to race we then proceaded to do one of the stupidest things that I have ever done. He slowed to about 35 in a 45 and traffic began to pull away so I slowed down. Then he slowed to about 20 so I did too well we did this for about 30 sec and traffic was stacking up behind us and starting to honk I ended up at about 10 in 1st gear. We both took off at about the same time and I got about a car on him right away and held the lead until about 40, but he was pulling and by 70 he had me by about 2 cars and then we caught traffic again. We got to the next light and we both rolled are windows down and I asked him "why he was not looking for bigger fish?" he laughed and said "that he did not get very good traction." His buddy then said that my civic was very impressive and asked me if I had a turbo I told him nope and the driver seemed impressed too. So impressed infact that he chased me until we caught a light and then we went from a dig. We were dead even until I shifted to second and half missed the gear or some ****??? Because it went into gear, but it made a loud bang so I stoped . I really wanted to get a good run in too. So am I impressed by all of that hp?? Not really I was expecting to get my a$$ handed to me. Maybe he really did not get traction or could not drive who knows. I know spyder will have a comment though

haha I think that I just figured out what the bang was I bet that I was not paying attention and really layed into my rev limiter. The only thing else that I can think of is that I busted an engine mount. Any other ideas???

My car made a loud bang from the tranny when it didn't get all the way into gear. It was in well enough that it worked until I got off the gas and then it slipped out and... bang. Probably not what happened, but a possibility, I guess.

That loud bang is like a variant of wheel hop, the clutch doesn't quite catch, the wheels don't quite get traction and theres a loud bang. Some people think its an engine mount thing, some people think its the clutch finally getting grip.

yeah I was really expecting more. The only time that car pulled hard was the second race when I fvcked up. I don't know maybe 70 did not give him enough time to get to speed?? He did say that he did not get traction, but even when he did start to pull it was not that great, the rx7 that I raced pulled 10 times harder.

No...... I thought that my 1.7 should keep up with a GTO or maybe lose by a car. You opened my eyes. I better stop trying to race vetts and vipers now that I know I won't win .

besides I am not stock. I have a intake (15hp), exhaust (25hp), header (25hp), lightened fly wheel (25hp), short shifter (we will call that 10, but I think it is closer to 13hp). So that should give me around 227hp in a car that only weighs in at 2595lbs. I say it is a drivers race.

just so you know, and so you dont get flamed your numbers are quite off.

intake, exhaust, and header COMBINED will maybe give you 10-12hp on a D17 engine civic. your flywheel reduces inertial weight so really you dont get any horsepower added from it, but it will reduce lost hp essentially from a lighter flywheel. we will call it adding maybe 3hp but "adding" is an incorrect term.

and your short shifter does not give you any horsepower. it only makes it easier to shift.

so really with your mods, you've gained maybe 12-18hp total. and even that would be generous, since the D17 just doesn't respond all that great to N/A mods.

now, keeping that in mind, a GTO would have eaten you up like a fat kid does a cupcake.

no way an intake is giving up 15hp, 25 for exhaust, etc. maybe 15-20hp all together. you have to be joking.. i hope.

However I am not joking about the crappy GTO driver that is all still true............ lol short shifter adding 10hp I thought that it would give it away, but I had to go to the lug nuts

the gto has traction control and it hooks up pretty good, he shoulda made you cry mommy when he went flying buy you, then you could have held your fist out the window and screamed "chevvyyy pppowweer". but alas he was a shitty driver.

I know spyder will have a comment though [/QUOTE]
You know i will let me inform all of you about the gto The car is sick fast with alot of TQ now you said he still had temps on and he lost traction right? well when you race a gto you must i mean must take off traction control because if you dont and you start racing if in any way you hit a bump or lose traction the gas pedal kicks back at you hard. the first time that happend to me i got scared, i didn't kno what was goin on till i went on the gto forum and found out that you must hit that T/C button before racing, so that guy had no clue what he was doing and believe me I had I/H/E Pully, Venom 400 Module, and a cf hood on my vic and that shyt was a turtle compared to my GTO.

yeah, the car was pulling, but not near as hard as it should have. He said that he did not get traction which makes sence because I lost traction too. However once he pulled past he was not pulling very hard. I don't know what the hell he was doing wrong.
