Joint Accounts

I live in New Mexico and my father and my step-mother are talking about divorce and my father is worried about losing everything. He wants me to go to the bank with him to open what sounds like a "joint account". I am worried how this will affect me if they have a fight over the money and if he has any credit problems will having a joint account with him affect my credit. I am still fairly young and do not want to make things difficult in the future to buy a home and such. Any ideas or remarks appreciated. Thanks.

just dont put all your money in the account, talk to a civil lawyer about this first, it may have repurcussions, just be careful, as far as credit, just dont bounce checks.

Thanks for the replies. I had not planned on putting any money in the account. I think that he is doing it in hopes that she cannot take any of the money that is in the account. The way I understand it anything gained, made, bought, etc. during the marriage is property of both. I do not know how involved I want to get. I am worried if my father's current credit will affect my credit if we are both on the same account.
