flat repair: plug or patch

just done the flat tire repair today, but a shop i went they used some sticky stuff plugged in tire hole, i was wonder if this is good for tire, cuz I heard some peps get them patched from inside. Pls give me idea.

A nail hole is in the middle of the tread line "U" on Falken 512, its plugged now, but kinda like a big pimple.....is this good or should i take them to patched instead.....cost 8 bucks to get it plug

since you already got it plugged, just leave it until you notice the problem again. i got one hole in my tire and i got it plugged last year. still working fine and no leaks.
its always better to get it patch, but its more expensive, and sometimes just plug it is enough.

I've been told by a professional mechanic that plugs are only a temporary fix. Water can leak in between the tread and into the belts and eventually cause the tire to fail catastrophically when it delaminates at high speeds. Never use a plug-only or patch-only repair.

The information below from a Cooper Tire website confirms this.

If any tire has sustained a puncture, have the tire dismounted and inspected internally by any tire dealer for possible damage that may have occurred.

Punctures in the tread of passenger tires which do not exceed 1/4-inch (6mm) in diameter can be repaired by following Rubber Manufacturers' Association (RMA) recommended repair procedures. A plug by itself or a patch by itself is an unacceptable repair. The repair material used - for example, a "combination patch and plug" repair - must seal the innerliner and fill the injury to be considered a permanent repair. Never use a tube in a tubeless tire as a substitute for a proper repair.

If the tire has a puncture in the tread which exceeds 1/4-inch (6mm), any puncture in the sidewall, or if more than one radial cable per casing ply is damaged, the tire must be replaced.

just buy another tire. the last thing u want is to be going 100mph and have a blowout which could kill you.

there is no point to buy another tire if it can be repaired. We just went over this stuff in school and the best way is a patch/plug combo.

What I still dont understand though is if a punture cant be repaired if it is more them 1/4 inch, dont most puntures go all the way through the tread, causing air to come out it. If it didnt then you wouldnt have the leak in the first place.

thanks for all your reply.....the tire i got pluged is on driver side -rear tire.....tire prob. 8000 miles only. still plenty of tread left..... i hate this happen.....

The 1/4" or 6mm refers to puncture diameter, not depth. Holes larger than that seriously compromise the integrity of the belts.

You should always get a plug and patch from the inside. The tire MUST be unmounted for inspection. Sometimes it's hard to see sidewall damage from driving with little or now pressure. Those sticky cotton plugs are considered temporary, although many people use them. I bet if you put soapy water over the plug and waited 10 min. you'll see tiny air bubbles seeping out. Tis means moisture can get in.
