Kicks sealed or free air?
Kicks sealed or free air?
I've heard it argued both ways. My general understanding is this:
1. Kicks for midrange and highs do not have to be sealed.
2. Kicks for midbass drivers should be sealed.
3. Kicks that are sealed, MUST have equal airspace.
4. Kicks that are sealed should allow some access to cabin air, like a tiny hole.
What is everyone's opinion on the matter?

wow, phew, i'm glad you're around to help him with his questions
jk...sorry, i don't know about your question. I imagine if you can get the volume approximately close to what it models out to want, then sealed would be the way to go.

jk...Actually chime in with whatever you want. it's not a question of anything I'll be doing, Im just trying to be the catalyst for some good discussion.

ok
sealed/ported/aperiodic/firing into carpet and all these things are all pretty much speaker dependant, be it midrange or midbass, unless your midrange has a sealed back ( a la dls 3" midrange )
some midbasses perform like *** in the kick, and GREAT in doors, and vice versa
so to answer your 4 q's
1 - speaker dependant for midrange, and for tweeters, 99.9% of them have their own enclosure within that tiny casing
2 - again, speaker dependant. some even like ported kicks, with tuned ports and all, some kick *** when in a proper aperiodic setup, some are good just firing into the carpet
3 - well yeah, otherwise you get different frequency response on each side, which could cause phasing issues, staging issues, and frequency response anomalies
4 - the hole would thereby nullify it being sealed, turning it into a ported enclosure, or, if the hole opens into the carpet, it starts acting like an aperiodic
the only thing thats constant in any speaker installation, is that the front wave nd rear wave must be separated. with that stated, you have a shitload of options to choose from. some are MUCH harder than others, some are easier. the absolute best thing to do would be to either call up the manufacturer and ask them, or, test test test

Wow great info post or thread or whatever it is. so by test test test what did youmean? i mean, how do you test a speaker to see if it needs a baffle or not in a kick. lets say for instance i buy some infinity kappas, how can i tell if they would better enclosed or not enclosed?

I don't have an answer, but became more confused when Ludlam chimed in. I always feel like I should have a dictionary out when I'm reading his posts.
