News: Street racing, car get squashed
So on the news they said if you get caught street racing in L.A. your car becomes a paper weight. WTF What you guys think or is this nothing new to you guys?
Yeah the state passed some law around when 2 Fast 2 Furious came out in theaters.
If you get caught street racing they have the option to just impound your car FOREVER. They were sick of people who raced knowing they'd get their cars back in 30 days.

It is for habitual offenders. And it has not been upheld in court yet, as it may violate the 4th amendment. But driving is a privilege, not a right, so they could remove your privileges for life.

It is being reviewed right now. So far you get fined and impounded. They want to make it to where your car is impounded and crushed. This way you can not go and pick it up from the impound or buy from auctions. However this stands for those who are exceding unsafe speed limits 70+ (which has to be prooved), and those who are repeat offenders. My friend is a police officer for LA county and is on those task forces that raid in on races. He drives his SRT-4 into races and pritty much calls for backup once they get underway. So watch out for a black SRT-4 stock looking. He will get you.
Ahh, the life of California.
Besides, if I wanted to race, I would drive 20 miles, pay 10 dollars and do it. And we do race the po po with their cars. But we get time slips, not speeding tickets. The cops are cool at the strip.
California needs to take its head out of its ars and build more strips to have people do it legally. If people had a choice, it would be help out. Fix the problem.
If they have a track and then do it illegally, squash them cars, stupidity kills. But they build skate parks for kids, what is wrong with a track?

There is no way this will stand. It's just to scare people. The city can't take something you own and destroy it because you broke a traffic law. My friend once got a ticket for racing in a beat up lumina van because he and the car next to him were going the same speed. He didn't even realize it until the cop pulled him over. That's why this won't work.

I agree with gearbox, it's just to scare people. There's a name for it, but I forgot what it's called ... kinda like how Hitler didn't always quickly kill/shoot people in public, but got his SS guards to kick the **** out of them until they were dead with their steel-toe boots.
it's not a law either, to my knowledge

ok, well I did some homework on it and it does seem to be a law ... however, to my knowledge, it does seem to be concentrated in the San Fernando area ... I'm not saying it doesn't apply to so cal or cali, but it seems to be concentrated in that area.I would assume that repeat or major offenders will get their cars taken away
That would completely suck losing your car like that. Just think what would happen to your insurance. I bet nobody would EVER insure you. How would you explain that to anyone? It would be on your driving record for that kind of driving, plus you would have to remain to pay on your car if it's not totally paid for while its a pancake at the junk yard. So yeah, i dont think any company would want to insure anyone who got their car squashed for racing and are still paying on the squashed car lol.

San diego is the worse place to get caught doing something stupid with a car.

hmm, interesting... im sure it applies in some way, shape or form to other cities and counties.
i've been pulled over once for "street racing". I was on sepulveda going down. . i was crusing with AK. He pulled next to me and we were doing about 30. Suddenly we just did a little shift and we were somewhat off for a few seconds. Next thing you know, two cycles pull in between us and AK slows down. He gets away from the cops and i start to slow down and what da ya know. . .they flag me down and pull me over. Lucky for them. . .i told em that i missed shifted and that's what made me push forward. They let me go with a warning. ..

actually, if they impound your car (for whatever reason), they can do whatever they want with it. 9 our of 10 times they auction it off though, it cost money to squash a car, they make money selling your car.

actually they cant do whatever they want with it..
they have to notify the registered owner and the lienholder. If both parties dont respond within 10 days then the tow yard gets to sell it. Pretty much just to cover their expenses(tow+storage). the rest goes to the registered owner...
as for squashing the car.. i think its called a forfiture... thats pretty much when yeah they take your car away from you and you dont get **** back. i think it usually happens when you commit a crime with the car such as trying to smuggle drugs...
i work for a finance company and the guy i share the office with works with impounds.
