Newest Class Project

My automotive technology class is starting our 2-year class project:

SVT Cobra motor + Tremek 6-speed + Ford Focus + RWD conversion + supercharger + nitrous

we have the plans of what is called the "Terminator Focus" and we're running a lot off that...surprisingly the Cobra motor is almost a direct drop swap

The supercharger is going to require a lot of fabrication but that's what I live for. So is the RWD because we're working with a 2001 FWD model

oh yeah - the reason I posted - has anyone done this conversion (the terminator focus) or know anyone who has or know anything about it? Pitfalls? Things to remember? We have a stack of info now that is my job to compile and summarize to explain to everybody, I'm just looking for everything out there.

Check out some older issues of Sport Compact Car Magazine, they had a Focus SVT with a complete cobra engine swap and RWD conversion. I'll try to find it when i get home and get back with ya, but it has been done before. And from what i remember from the article, it accelerated better with 5 people in the car rather than 1!!!! haha

It needs a little thing called traction. The Focus is a lightweight car (in comparison to the Cobra), so the RWD is gonna suck. Best thing to do is put some bags of cement or a ballast over the rear wheels, like they used to do in old muscle cars.

What year and model Charger did your dad have? Mine had a 68 440 Magnum. Sumbitch would run. He did a load of work on that car. Rebuilt the motor and had it balanced and blueprinted. Was such a badass car.

that is a mad project, excellent way to learn, its gonna be a killer focus.

but u will have traction problems, but a better suspension setup and some weight in the back should solve it.

try getting a bigger fuel tank and relocating it to the back so it ads extra weight to the back end. that is one suggestions among other ways u can transfer weight to to back.

ty, good idea...the battery is going in the back also, as well as the sound system (if any...haven't decided if want a sound system or totally stripped out look), and any management systems we have will also be going in the rear...maybe get the extra big show nitrous bottles, just for the weight.

i remember reading about that swap. It sounds like the chassis was almost designed to take the motor and to have rear wheel drive?

Dude, you're going to have to keep me up to date on it. My dad would love to get his hands on another one. I've been looking around for one for him but they're a pretty rare car.

we're using the focus because we got one for free, lol. the other fords we have are an escort, a couple trucks, a windstar, and a couple lincoln/mercury v8s...our budget for this project is $0, just have to use everything we can find in the shop or in the junkyard out back

(well not zero but close to it, we're allowed to buy rims and tires, fill the nitrous tanks and anything we absolutely cannot fabricate)

K dude, just got home from work and found the issue of Sport Compact Car magazine with the article in it. April 2004 Volume 16, NO. 04

It's got a small pic of it in the top right corner on the cover. It's the Issue with the white WRX that had a RWD conversion for drifting. Great article, the focus had 459 HP and 466lb ft of torque. The project was done by a performance shop called ATI (Accurate Technologies Inc.) If you can't find the article or don't have it then i'll post some pics up, k.

That seems like a fun class to take are you enrolled in a Tech school or community college! I wonder if they offer anything like down here in california!

hahah yes with Professor James.

nope, it was the former ASSET program (that stands for something Ford training something or other...automotive .... educational training or something) but then Ford backed out of it so we work on cars of all dealers now. Every class gets to do a project, it's a 2 year program through middlesex county college...last class redid the welding points on the suspension of a F250 to drop it to the floor, did some engine mods too it's badass

I did a previous year at rutgers in mechanical engineering because middlesex's program only begins on even years...I think I'm going to go finish my bachelor's back at rutgers after I graduate with my AAS in automotive tecnhology
